Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
There is some good discussion and ideas in this previous thread on crankcase ventilation for the flathead V8.

Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
I've never seen a kit per se unless Speedway or someone makes one. Folks on the HAMB have used grommets & PCV valves that they have found to fit the draft tube port and carb base plates with a vacuum port to draw the vapors in. Many of these mods use the old fuel pump port for a vent/oil filler and cap off the 8BA type oil fill port to get a better balance of vapor flow inside the crankcase.

Kit available here but you can do it a lot cheaper with the correct grommet an pcv valve and piece of 3/8 hose.

Though kinda' expensive, that looks like a nice kit. I especially like the aluminum piece with the o-ring that goes into the road draft tube port. When I did mine, I used the proper sized rubber sink stopper with a hole with a piece of tubing epoxied in. That was 20 years ago, though.

51 MERC-CT: I used one of these (or something very similar) on a flathead that I built four years ago. Works well. Used a different hose and fitting with it, but it does the job and is unobtrusive. Maybe not exactly what a purist would recommend, but OK by me.

Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
I've had several manifolds built by Baxter Ford. They use a drilled freeze plug in the vent hole with a grommet and PCV valve and run a hard line to the right side of the manifold and tap in between the carbs below the mounting surface.

Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
It's simple, remove the breather pipe from the manifold, use a 1-1/4 grommet that pcv fits in, I like the 90 degree pcv from a 6 cyl ohv jeep usually the stock intake has a fitting under the back of the carb, install a 90* fitting, you can hardly see the hose laying along the side of the intake. Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
would a small 2 inch air filter work? is the vacuum really needed?

Re: PCV set-up for 1949-53 Merc engine
The Vacuum pulls the offending vapors out of the crankcase to be burned in the combustion process and then expelled out the exhaust.
Any filter that is used is on the intake side of the system.

Ok thanks I'll let him know. Only thing he's doing is preventing dirt from getting in crank. Fumes remain in engine bay.
