A few dabs of contact cement to hold the welt in place can be useful.

Two people sure help. I helped my friend do his 31 wide bed pickup and it took a few tries to get the welt pulled in tight and straight. I was inside the cab tightening the bolts while he was on the outside and pushed the welt into place and held it until the bolts were tight.

Dave,
When I experience "GAPOSIS" I use those little self adhesive round Velcro thingys to increase the thickness. I also use them at the ends of a welt, so's they don't EVER pull out when I wipe the car! Bill W.

to make things easy you really need 3 guys, two to hold the welt on the cowl and pull snug, and the third guy to mark where the holes are, after you have the holes marked cut a U shaped slot in the welt about a 1/2" wide centering the hole, cut it to about 1/4" or so from the bead, that gives you some play to keep the holes lined upset tank in place and one go inside car under dash, the other two guys lays the welt on the tank and pushes it in place, the one under the dash installs the bolts, dont tighten to tight, start in the middle of cowl, install the bolts as the welt is pushed in, using a pair of plyers to grab the flap of the welt to pull it tight against the cowl as you go, use a wooden paint stirer sharpen on the end to help push the welt in, when done with the bolts use the pliers to to keep the welt straight and against the cowl, when it looks straight and tight agains the cowl to you tighten all the bolts

I used some masking tape to hold it in place. I put the tank in place, punched holes for the bolts and then pulled the tape out before I bolted it down. Some of the tape did not come out but it was under the window sill so it did not show. Mine was a 1929 but I assume yours would be about the same.

Had a loose, slightly shrunk welt on an inside curve at the rear corner of the gas tank. Used a syringe & injected Regular Gorilla Glue, which foams to fill voids & taped it down until it dried. I first rubbed dusting wax on the exposed welt & adjacent paint so that any foam cam out, I could just fleck it off. This worked very well!
A dear friend & talented car builder will NOT use welt ANYWHERE! After his car is painted, he meticulously caulks & smooths the joints way back in. Then calls his pin striper & has him paint the caulking. It looks great as if it came new that way & no one pays any attention to it. Bill W.
