coating on L-100 cam
I have my new L-100 cam from Dave at Cam Techniques and it has a black coating on it. Hard to wash off. Am I going to have to take this now and have it polished??? Dave is not answering the phone today. Thanks Bill

Most likely that is the result of a heat treat to harden the surface of the lobes. Some shops used to do a case hardening process. If that is what he did don't try to remove it. Case hardening is only a few thousanths thick. Get a hold of Dave to verify.

Do not remove this, it's a form of parkerizing and is part of the brake in process. A good reason these cams last so long.

It may be a good grind BUT I am totally unimpressed with the quality of work.
The black finish is Parkerizing. DO NOT rub it off. From what I can see in the pic, that cam has not been heat treated. Last edited by Pete; 04-02-2012 at 07:41 PM. |

like every one says it a wear protection for cam and lifters on first start up, you cant tell if its heat treated or not from the pic because of the parkerization, i dont no of any cam grinder or maker that would send out a soft cam

I would bet a lot of money that it is NOT heat treated other than original factory type. There are tell tale signs.

My L100 also had the black coating.......I installed it around the middle of 2007.....(it replaced a JR 400)
About a year ago, i installed a stock 8ba ally manifold i modified. useing dual 350 Hollys with small ID risers and some other mod's..... The aim being to speedup the velocity of the fuel ...it gave excellent results....... At the same time i checked the adjustables (Flatattack tappets'...best i've seen or used)... Not one of them needed adjustment !!!.... So it would be safe to assume there was little or no wear in the cam.... |

Pete, be nice, I've been using Davids L-100 for ove 20 years now. I've installed dozens of them and not one has failed, YET!! I have no idea what he does to his cams, but they run well on 50/55 valve spring pressure and sound great. In Richards 276 it's getting over 20mpg in mostly local driving. I have no idea why it runs as good as it does,but the Literio Bros, sure got it right. When I first saw it I told the customer it was too much cam for his application, but he said us it. That was back in the late 80's and the car was a 5500 lb Ford ambulance. I was sold, been using them ever since.

The new Secretes of Speed magazine was in the mail today. The Sweeds are building a split cam for Model "A"s. The reason is the cam bearing holes in the block limit the lobe size. The cam comes in two pieces and oil pump gear is keyed and used for a coupling sleeve and a long bolt runs the length of the cam to tighten and hold both half's of the cam together. The cam halfs are tilted into the engine and then the cam is assembled. The cam can have 1/4" higher lobes.
I know this is not v/8 stuff but I thought everybody should be exposed to new ideas. Charlie Yapp said counter weights on the crank might hit high cam lobes.

Some good info here.Appears that some regrinds he spoke about aren't re heat treated. Must be deep enough and not disturbed by regrind.I am no cam regrind guru. Someone else will have an opinion and chime in. |

I guess the question is how deep in the cam chilled cast iron hardens like Ford did it. Nobody here has ever complained about a soft reground cam. You'd have to switch to a Chevy site to find that.

Most all reground cams are not heat treated after being reground, they reley on the factory heat treatment Thats one reason they use the parkerizing. Not just for start up.
