Default Rear Hub to axle taper

When installing the rear hub to the axle taper, should this be insalled dry or be lubricated?

Before you assemble them you must first inspect them for galling or signs they surfaces have been turned on each other. If they are galled or otherwise damaged you need to clean up the surfaces with some sandpaper to ensure a good fit. You do the inside of the taper with sandpaper on a stick.
The object is to not remove enough material to change the shape of the taper, just make it fit nice.

Dave , An old time machinst trick on taper shafts is to put a layer of blackboard chalk on the taper. I do this on drill chucks to keep them from spinning and coming off .Bubby Sharp in KY

Dry the taper is what drives the hub, wheel. The key is to keep the hub from creeping on the taper. So you do not want any lube on there.

I guess I should have known better, but no damage was done, these were a pair of NOS cast iron drums and hubs along with NOS axles that I installed for a short road test. The theory of outboard and small engine flywheel installation should have tipped me off, but the way some tapered axle hubs get rusted on to the shaft's made me paranoid. Years ago we wailed on some rear hubs on 55 Dodge with a three legged puller, let it sit for a few days, then we got busy in the shop, so we never got back to it . The old Dodge was a loaner car.
