best place to buy a timing gear

There is a lot of talk about low quality timing gears being sold out there.
Mine had given out after 80 years service...
Looking for a new one to get my car running again...
If it were 1933 again I would buy a ford original..after all it lasted 80 years..
I hope I last 80 years.
But this is 2014...where does one buy the more reliable timing gear for a Ford model A/B engine?

Bratton's. The Model "A" and Model "B" timing gears are the same.

Also get a new nut to secure the timing gear. Bratton's also has a special socket to remove and install the timing gear nut which is a bear to get off.

While you are at it, replace the camshaft plunger and spring. Be sure to grease the bearing face of the plunger otherwise it will squeal and scare you when the engine runs again.

Yes, I've had some that needed heat plus my 20 ton press. I'd probably leave the crank gear unless it's pitted or otherwise damaged in some way.

I've used metal gears from Snyders and Smith and Jones model A parts. As said, Dan makes the best gears but I have had no problems or noise with any of the metal gears that I have used. Yes, removing and replacing the crankshaft gear is a tough job . Many times I have replaced only the cam gear. If the crank gear isn't pitted or obviously damaged , you can get by very well by just replacing only the cam gear. over the years this is mostly what the common man has done . It all depends on what you are expecting or how hard that you want to work in the process .

Snyder's has the laminated. I have used over 100 and have not had a failure.

I am not trying to make a perfect restored engine. I have an original "I think" 1933 engine supposedly with 43,000 miles on it. It sounded great when running. Very quiet.
I like to keep it as original as I can....
I am NOT seasoned auto guy but rather a bumbling novice that want's to fix only that which is broken so as to get the car running. I just don;t want to put a crummy
Timing gear that might break so that I have to replace again soon!
I do little thing like when I had the oil pan off before starting the car, I cleaned and painted it with engine Green. I imagine I should paint the Timing gear covers when I have then off too, right.
I know that many of you guys are real perfectionists....
Doing the FRame off restorations.
If I did that with this car, I may never live to see the car run.
I basically will get it going and restore sections at a time.
But I feel it is in pretty good shape...Not much rust at all.

The oil pan should be painted black. The laminated gear should give you many years of good service, as Dave has pointed out.

gOOD TO KNOW. I guesd the v8 pan is green but not the model B pan.
The 1933/34 restoration guide only showed color photos of the v8 engine.
I will have to paint it black when it is off again so I can put news gaskets and clean out the debrie from the timing gear.

I would go with any of the NEW gears and stay away from NOS ones unless you know they are laminated. The ones with the metal center, they come apart and some were macerated (go to the bottom of the link).

Loved the timing gear that was being sold on ebay, the metal center had come out, they were selling it as a Model A two piece gear!

I bought 2 at Hershey, an aluminum and a laminated. My mechanic had his choice which one to instal and he chose the laminated one. Obviously he had his reasons and I am happy with his choice. Wayne

That was like when Lou costello was preparing dinner
He first looked under the Ice box and took the pan out full of water dumped the old water
and then filled the pan with fresh water and put it back under the ice box.

Do you think the laminated gear acts as a pseudo shock absorber to vibrations??
Has anyone every researched why ford did not use a metal gear? I know that in new cars they use a timing chain, right? Maybe it is a vibration damper thing to not use metal to metal contact here???

if you are not going to drive the car much, you won't need metal gears. all sheet metal on the engine should be black.

I want to use the car as my everyday driver, but I am retired and never really go any where, so I will probably use it 3000 miles per year.
