Default Hidden USB Charger

I was looking for a USB charger for my '46 Coupe, 6V + ground, and found this supplier that makes them to fit in ashtrays of classic cars. I contacted the Phil owner of Classic Chargers in Penticton BC, about one for my '46, and it wasn't one that he supplied. After sending accurate measurement of my ashtray, and a few emails, Phil custom made one for me. It fit nicely in the ashtray, and will not be seen until I need to power my phone or GPS. He now has them for sale on his web site.

Jack. Ford designed in two ash trays on the dash. One for your cigar ashes, and the other for the USB charger.

It's on the option list, right after the SBC engine option.

Mine works great. The fact is the charger, even in a 12 volt system, limits the voltage to a little above 5 volts, the requirement for cell phone etc. Since the 6 volt system is usually 6.5 to 7.3 volts, not an issue. All you have to do is make sure the charger is isolated from the body and them just run wires from the changer to the power supply and ground. That way the charger will be a Neg ground and positive hot lead.

I bought a couple of chargers from a marine parts place and made a bracket under the dash.

USB uses 5V max so the ports have internal circuitry to step-down the voltage from 12V, 6V, or whatever the system voltage would be.
