Re: Bringing car car from Canada question?
I trailered a Sedan Delivery across the border from Winnipeg about 7 years ago. I was very nervous. Went without a problem and no fees at the border. It took about 15 minutes to clear customs.
Good luck |

Call the border CBP Custom’s office in Detroit or Port Huron, Michigan and get the answer from the people you will deal with. Laws change frequently so don’t rely on information that was valid in the past. Wayne

New rules a couple years ago. https://www.dirtlegal.com/blog/6-ste...us-by-yourself
I will be easier since it's 25+ years old. Get the paperwork right at the border or you can run into problems down the road. |

Re: Bringing car car from Canada question?
Only problem I had was how to open the door to the customs office. They required nothing more than a bill of sale. The bite comes when you have to pay money to the licensing and sales tax guys

Re: Bringing car car from Canada question?
I brought a car crossing Niagra to FL. Customs at the border did not want to bother with the paperwork and told me to go to Customs in Orlando. Orlando Customs were not happy that Niagra did not process it but went without a hitch.
Had to take car to DMV to verify VIN and at the Tag Office there was no Sales tax as I owned the vehicle in Canada for over six months. |

Re: Bringing car car from Canada question?
Bring a bill of sale, Canadian ins/title paper work showing that it is not a salvage vehicle and go through customs to get the import paperwork. Should take about 30 mins. There is no duty on it, just state tax at DMV.

Re: Bringing car car from Canada question?
Quote:
It depends on the year of manufacture. It depends on whether the vehicle final point of assembly was in the states or not. It depends on if the vehicle was legally imported into Canada if Canada was not the country of final assembly/origin. It depends on the VIN history on file in Canada and in the states. Do not assume anything. I advise folks buying a vehicle they plan on titling - registering - insuring - driving on the road in their state to check and see what their state requires. I also advise they take delivery on the US side of the border and leave it to the Seller to bring it across. More than one person I know has bought a car in Canada they planned to drive on the road in the states - picked it up in Canada - arrived at the border - found the vehicle could not be legally imported.
