Hello from Ohio
I would like to say hello and thanks for having such a wonderful site with tons of info. This past weekend I picked up a 31 Tudor in Alabama. Got her unloaded and sitting in the drive. Next week I am having a storage building installed to house it. I look forward to chatting and hopefully meet some of you fine folks. I am sure I will have a ton of questions. I have already done lot of research on here and there is plenty. I also bought a couple of the model a books that have been mention here. So, thanks in advance for all the info and help. As soon as I figure out how to attach photos I will.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Welcome Jim! I too am in central Ohio. Perhaps our paths will cross one of these days. Haven't had the 29 out this year, but hope to soon. If you see a green and black sport coupe in the Reynoldsburg area, that's me! Enjoy the site.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Welcome, and make sure the storage building has good ventilation. Two years ago I went to look at a 1950 Studebaker in northern Minnesota. The guy drove a nice Champion into a metal storage building with little or no ventilation, then threw plastic over the car, and left it there for 10 years untouched. The whole bottom foot of the car was rusted away, inluding the frame. The inside of the car had so much mold you'd need a gas mask to enter the car. He still sold it for $1,000 because the chrome was still very nice, but air tight metal buildings and plastic coverings sure take their toll.

Welcome to the Barn Jim, this is a great place to get and give help.
At least you will have your car at home to work on, I have to travel and hour to get to mine since I have no secure place to park it at my house. Let the fun begin! |

Re: Hello from Ohio
Welcome aboard! I'm glad to see someone else from the Buckeye state at the Barn site. Now I would suggest that you join a local club. There are a lot of people with a ton of Model A knowledge out there that are very friendly and willing to help you out any way they can. I don't know if Zanesville has a local club, but if they don't Columbus has the Scioto Model A Ford Club. They have around 80 members throughout the state and you would be more than welcome!

Re: Hello from Ohio
Good advice to hunt up a local club. Already you have several other buckeye guys to ask questions as you start to drive the car, and work thru its maintenance.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Thanks guys. As soon as I get everything settled with the garage and get all comfy I do plan on finding a local club. We don't have anything in Z'ville so it might be Sciota. Thanks for the info.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Hello Jim , from way up north. I also have a 31 Tudor, and two grandkids that love it. I am already looking for one for my grandson to learn to drive on. In my opinion you have the perfect car to enjoy. Best wishes and good luck. if I could give you one little of advice, it would be to go real slow. Don't tear it all apart. Just repair one small thing at a time and drive it a little as you go. Most cars that are completely dismantled never go back together again. People get discouraged and lose interest. I know of cars that have been apart for 40 years. In my humble opinion, the only way to do ground up restoration, is to do it on a second car, while you are having fun driving the first one. Again good luck, and get the kids involved. Jim.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Actually, Cockshutt Kid, the frame and running gear are completed. The man also started on the body. He did all of the body repair and installed the wood kit. Unfortunately he died 15 yrs or so ago and it and a 29 coupe, that he had completed, sat since that time. A buddy of mine found them and rebuilt the carbs and tuned them both up. It starts up and drives fine. The interior and paint, as well as little odds and ends need to be done. I will take the body off this summer and start on it. Hopefully to be back together for the spring thaw. I have a 3 yo granddaughter that has fallen in love with it, but she wants a chair in the back to sit in. Also a 10 yo grandson who wants to take it to his high school prom. My wife calls it her 'Bonnie and Clyde' car.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Well, I finally got the photo figured out. Here is my 'new to me' 31 Tudor. Found the original speedo in a box. It shows 41228 miles. Also found two window regulators with the original Ford parts tag still on them. Garage will be delivered and set up on Wednesday. Can't wait to get started.

Re: Hello from Ohio
They mounted a temp gas tank from a mower on the radiator support rods. It had been sitting for 15 yrs or so and until I can get the tank out and flushed, I will use it.

Re: Hello from Ohio
BTW it's a '30, judging by the radiator shell and the running board apron design.
anyway feel free to stop by anytime. Eric |

Re: Hello from Ohio
Ericr, you may be right. Can't read the engine number. It looks like somebody stamped a new set of numbers over the old number. As soon as my garage arrives next Wednesday, I will put it in there and get the body off so I can read the frame numbers. All I got with it is a bill of sale. How hard is it to get an Ohio title with that? Rookie here so be kind.....Needless to say, Model A's are new to me.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Thank you very much Eric. I will give them a call asap. I did look up the differences between the 30 and the 31 radiator shroud and the fender to running boards. It matches the 30. As soon as I can get the body off of the frame I hope to verify the year. Are there any other tell-tell signs that anyone sees that could give me a clue on the year? There is a Ford factory stamp on the lower left of the windshield with a 1932 date. Not sure what that means.

Re: Hello from Ohio
If you get the number on the frame take a good picture of it and also a good pencil etching of it. I took both with me to the DMV when I went to title 2 of my Model A's, and they did keep and use both.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Another tell-tale sign:
Early 1930's had an oval speedometer. Late 1930's had a round speedometer. So if it had a round speedometer, it could be either a late 1930 or a 1931. If it has an oval speedometer, it is definitely an early 1930. W. Michael |

Thanks to all for all of your comments and welcomes. I do plan on joining a club at some point. I would like to visit with a few and see which one fits me best and I can't wait till the car shows and swap meets start so I can see the restorations up close and get some first hand knowledge.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Thanks Russell. The car is pretty solid. All of the running gear and frame are done but once I get it in the shop I will verify that all is still good. The previous owner also installed all of the wood kit and did most of the body work before he died. I want to remove the gas tank and have it cleaned and sealed and add paint and interior and of course new tires. I know there will be other issues but these are the big one.

Re: Hello from Ohio
Welcome aboard.
Hey, you might want to check with the local guys about a great Winter swap meet up in Medina Ohio. I was there and found it quite interesting to be at an indoor swap meet in January - but then again I am not from the Great Lake region and winters are much different here in Northern California! It was a rewarding meet, full of parts and some cars, all surrounded by helpful Model A'ers. Have Fun! Be well - SHEC |
