ID year of engine? 49-50 or 51-53
The engine that has been fitted to my 33 Ford BB truck is an 8BA. The stamped number on the block top is 32SF114492. The engine was rebuilt by FOMOCO in Boston years ago. Has 10 over pistons and 1 slightly burned exhaust valve. I overheated it and blew head gasket. My reason for asking is that MAC/Eckler's shows 2 different exhaust valves. One set is 49-50, the other is 51-53. Both show the same size in the listing. Is there a real difference and does it matter which one I use? I know the guides are the one piece guide and no O-ring. like late guides. Also has anyone found a good tool to compress the valve springs? I am using a modified small crowbar notched to fit around the valve stem. Thanks, John.

John, Be sure to carefully read all the posts in this thread about rotator valves. Then post questions on Fordbarn. Also, buy a good rebuild manual.
https://www.earlyfordv8.org/forum/pr...=18&Topic=3031 It would be a great help if you could post some photos of what you are working with, including the valves assembly you are now using. I made this valve spring compressor (see photos) 33 years ago when I rebuilt my 8BA with one piece valve guides and rotator valves. I used Ron Bishops's book as a guide. I remember there was a misprint of the firing order in the book. https://www.alibris.com/search/books...E&gclsrc=aw.ds It was originally a valve spring compressor for small gasoline engines but with the block of wood added, it worked great. Use a hardwood like ash or oak. Perhaps you could make one also. My engine did not have hardened valve seats and they were in good shape so I let them be. I used the rubber seals were used on both intake and exhaust valves. Some Fordbarn folks say this is not needed. That may be so but at the time I just wanted to rebuild the engine as OEM. Good luck. Do a Fordbarn search on valves. For instance, you must read all of this thread. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=238741 and this: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...ht=pickle+fork There are many good books about rebuilding a flatty. https://www.google.com/search?q=ron+...hrome&ie=UTF-8 Last edited by 19Fordy; 09-23-2021 at 02:22 PM. |

Re: ID year of engine? 49-50 or 51-53
The valves that came out have a shoulder near the valve head. The shoulder stops the valve from pulling too far into the guide while the unit is out of the block making it a little easier to clip the guide in place. The valves I see in the market do not show this style of valve. Any ideas?

OK most of the listings for exhaust valves look to be small block chevy valves. Does anyone make a real Ford style valve still? Do 8N Ford tractor valves work? They still show the shoulder that I am looking for. Thanks

I do not see rotators in the pictures so looks like a 49 or 50. BUT who knows what was done. You need non rotator exhaust valves like 49 or 50. Just about all valves nowadays will all be exhaust valves across the board. We get those from Napa.

I believe Chevy stems are a little longer don't know never used them. Tractor valves may work I have used tractor adj lifters in the past with no problems. |

Here's a view of the difference between rotator and non-rotator assemblies.

Re: ID year of engine? 49-50 or 51-53
Most replacement valves are stainless steel types now days. I still find NOS valves on flea pay now and then. Chevy valves are a little longer and 1.6" diameter so they will cause changes to the valve pocket.
Gary Go Fast (RIP) used to sleeve a set of valve guides with bronze liners for folks that went to SS valves and for a good price too. The SS valve stems can gaul on cast iron and steel guides in some cases. If the stems are hard chrome plated then they won't gaul but it adds to the price a good bit. |
