Installed the Simmons Super Power head
Forced myself to park the truck a couple weeks and do maintenance, while at it finally installed the Simmons head. Always something: broken head bolts (ended up leaving some old studs in place) and after 50k miles on an unknown rebuild/babbitt a few things that have me thinking about a fresh block build in the future. Reading here had me nervous about the premium silicone gasket so went with a Fel-Pro 7013 R4. Then on the second re-torque broke the water neck even though I used the match trick and checking against for flatness. Also the plugs move placing it right in the way of the spark advance rod, a little bend should fix.
All that fuss and I still enjoyed working on it. Now rebuild those the twin Simmons carbs! |

That's a thing of beauty. Now you need a Simmons Carb like mine.

Thanks!
I've got two thanks to Jim Huseby. Ran one for a while. Rebuilding both is next on the list! |

Re: Installed the Simmons Super Power head
You won't have problems with the water neck if you only use black silicon gasket maker insist of the usual water neck gasket. I leave the gasket out and just use black RTV silicon instead of the gasket. Never had a problem breaking the water neck this way

Re: Installed the Simmons Super Power head
I've also got a "Simmons Super Power Head" and some Simmons carbs to run on my "A". If and when I ever get off my butt and do it! My 1933 Simmons catalog lists two different high compression heads for the Model-A: a 5-to-1 and a 5.5-to-1 head. Which one my head is I have no idea.

I didn't know there were two either, I see on fordgarage.com he list Simmons at 6.1. I had a friend ask to CC this head but my in my stubborn rush to install I neglected to take him up on the offer. Now wish I had! |

Painting the head red would make it go even faster...

KCTA Chris,
Vincent Falter (Ford Garage) has also asked me to scan some pages in the catalog for him too. I'm not much of a computer whiz, but I'll try soon and let you know. Bob-A |

Water outlet neck: I have never used anything but a smear of silicone and I've never broken one.

Re: Installed the Simmons Super Power head
Thanks Bob! Larger scans are great, can help walk you through if needed. Purdy Swoft was collecting Simmons (this is a head he graciously sold), he may have more info on identification too. I'm always learning, not sure what happened on the water neck, light file and checked both with a straightedge, paper gasket with light silicone and used the paper matchsticks. Popped right after torque, maybe it was just its time to go. Just silicone next.
Cracked the Simmons Carbs apart, thats this weeks challenge. Painting the head red... what happens if just paint the whole truck? |
