Default Difference in early and late 28 wheels

Does anyone have a photo comparing the inside mounting surface of both the early 1928 and later 1928 wheels that they could post here? Thanks

No pic's. I always just measure the inside depth of the hub flange to tell the difference. 1" for early 28 and 1 1/4"for the later 28-29 wheels. Rod

Can you tell by looking? I am a visual guy and it usually won't set in my head until I actually see the difference. Plus I seldom have anything to measure with when I find something.

Use a quarter for a gauge. It is approximately one inch in diameter.

Page 328 in the SERVICE BULLETINS shows exactly what you want to see. Notice the shape of the outer part of the hub, near where the hub cap mounts. This is an easy way to tell the wheels apart.

I sold my only AR wheel, so I can't take a picture of it. If I find my camera I can take a picture of the later 1928 wheel.

My scanner doesn't work, or I could post a picture of page 328.

Here are both, You will note the 28 spokes are close to the outer edge.

Notice in Bill's picture the concave surface of the AR hub on the left is much sharper than the later wheel on the right, where the curve is a large gentle curve.

Are you referring to the area just a fraction of an inch away from where the lug nuts are? The groove area?

Just about an inch in fron the hubcap surface the hub gets smaller, so looking at the side view, it forms a convex curve. The curve on the right wheel is much more gentle.

And if you notice where the spokes are welded to the "drum" on the earlier wheel the distnce from the spoke to the edge is about equal front and back. On the later drum there is a lot more distance from the front to the spoke. ( yeah I found out this the hard way, I have 5 - 29 wheels and one 28.)

I have two rims that don't fit the rear hubs/brake drums on my A. The surface of the rim where the lug bolts are doesn't even touch the drum. If I tighten the lugs nuts enough the wheel kind of springs enough to work but I know thats not right so don't use those rims on the back, they fit just fine on the front. Could this be because of early rims on a late rear end? I have ran washers under the rim to get the lugs nuts to tighten but what is the deal?

I ran into the same with my car, thats how I found out I had different wheels. The rims on the back are slightly off the rims at the bolt holes, because the outer rim hits the drum. It is my understanding that this is correct as the rim forms a box when tightened. The earlier rim is narrower and would not contact the drum at the outside at all. I found this in an old post here. I just tightened them down, and no problem.

But not absolutely sure it is right.

after taking rear rim off my 28, I noticed a outer washer or ring about 5 in. diameter to take up that space. is this an after market spacer or did ford add this?
