Default replacing on/off lever

I have looked at past threads about this but need a little clarification. What shape is the bolt I need to drill out? Is it tapered or some kind of step? I assume it goes all the way thru the column.

Not sure what vehicle you are talking about but many FORD "On/Off" levers use a press fit. Very difficult to remove, I think.

The year of the vehicle is important due to changes in how the switch handle is assembled. What bolt are you in reference to, the bolt that holds the column drop to the bottom of the dash or the bolt that clamps the column drop to the steering column tube? Both of the above bolts are headless and have a 5/16-24 thread.

The vehicle is a 33 Ford 1 1/2 ton truck. The bolt I'm referring to is the lock retainer that twists off after locking in place.
Is the 5/16 bolt straight or does it have a taper at the end? I'm trying to figure out how I would drill it out.

As I mentioned there are only two bolts without heads(see above)the heads twist off (photo below with head). The lock cylinder is held in place with a special pin (no threads just serrated sides) that is pressed into the column drop casting and extends into the lock cylinder. This pin has a step to a smaller diameter where it enters the brass lock cylinder (see photo below). Depending upon how you want to put the cylinder back together with the column drop, the pin larger body can be drilled out using a drill and then pick out the reminder.

TerryOH... I just want to thank you for the help you've given me in the past on the "how to" disassemble the lock mechanisms, etc. I have done many following your advice. I still need to refer to your notes now and then... chalk that up to CRS.

Terry, I think I understand. In order to replace the switch, I need to remove the pin from the lock cylinder as well as drill out the 5/16 bolt. Thanks

Don: I have a '32 and I was able to remove the bolt by cutting a slot in the head with a Dremel tool with a well worn (smaller diameter) cut off wheel. Once I had a slot about 1/16" deep, I was able to remove the bolt with a straight bladed screwdriver.

Pete, I'll give this a try before drilling it out.
