Default '40 Ford Transmission Question

I've installed my freshened engine back in my coupe, with a rebuilt 3 speed transmission.
While shifting is fine, there is one problem I've noticed in my initial test drives.
I live on a hill, and the transmission does not seem to want to come out of 1st gear when descending this steep hill.
Can anyone advise as to what the issue might be?
Thanks,
Joe

Joe, that sounds normal. Your engine is holding back rather than driving your transmission. When going downhill, don't allow your speed to overtake the gear you are in. Consider yourself lucky that while in second gear going downhill, the opposite effect isn't happening, dropping out of gear. That is a common problem indicating a malfunction and a teardown to get it right.

If you're pushing in the clutch and trying to shift out of first gear, i would check the clutch adjustment to make sure it's disengaging when the pedal is depressed.

Thanks Alan.......maybe I can start out in second heading down the hill. I'm sure that would be an option.

Thanks Mac...........I have about 1" - 1 1/4" play at the top of the pedal, which I believe should be about right?
