Default 1931 Model A Tudor Standard Paint Colors

I am currently restoring a 1931 Model A Standard Tudor. The car was originally all black, but I am switching colors to Lombard blue. Just a few questions:

1.) What is the color of the dash rail and trim around the windows of the interior of a Lombard Blue color scheme for this model and year? I have heard that it is black; and others state that they are supposed to be painted a Ford maroon? Which is correct?

2,) What color is the upholstery?

If anyone has any interior pictures of a 31 Standard Tudor Lombard Blue vehicle, I'd really like to see them just to have an idea as to what my vehicle should look like. Thanks!

The Paint & Finish guide says:
Before 4/31, Dash rail & windshield pillars, door window and rear window trim is painted Moulding gray. Header finish strip is body color.

After 3/31, the above is maroon. Header strip also body color.

Just a guess.... Any interior fabric could go with any color? Does anyone know about this?

The judging standards lists

Grey check cloth until July 1931 Interior moldings Grey painted finish
Brown artificial leather After July 1931 Interior moldings maroon painted finish
Small brown check After July 1931 Interior moldings maroon painted finish

The Deluxe Tudor had

Tan Broadcloth
Bedford Cord
Green Mohair
Brown Mohair

Lower Body Lombard Blue
Upper Body, Belt, Molding and Reveals Black
Stripe Hessian Blue

Not related to your car, but in checking on this I didn't realize that up until July, 1930 all wheels were painted black.

It’s not too often a professional will offer to assist in this manner. We are very, very fortunate to have Brent in our midst. Take advantage of his offer.

The car in my avatar is Lombard Blue. Same thing, if you would like other pictures, or info, private message me.

The interior switched around between brown check and gray check depending on the month of your car

Gray check was used in 31, for a Standard Tudor until July of 1931, it was then dropped and changed to a small brown check in July of 31, with brown artificial leather or green mohair available in July of 31 as well. According to the Model A Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines.

Actually, the interior moldings for a 1931 Standard Tudor were Maroon, not light gray and wheels on a Standard Tudor were black. When a Deluxe Tudor was added in July of 31, then the wheels were hessian blue.

I show the moldings for the '30-'31 standard Tudor in Grey Check was grey, and that there was no green mohair in the Std Tudor. My Standards are the 1989 version. Have they changed?

This edition also shows Hessian Blue body color was introduced in September '30. July '30 to June '31 had the availability of Hessian Blue wheels. However after July '31, the wheel colors were only Black, Apple Green, Vermillion, and Tacoma Cream.

Yes, they have been revised. The molding color is no longer listed in the interior as shown in your picture. There is a complete molding chart now on page 12-18, which has the molding maroon.

Then Hessian Blue is a stripe color, but the Judging Standards state on page 22-1, in wheels and tires, "Prior to June 1930, wheels were dipped in gloss black enamel. Colored wheels were available as an accessory on all passenger vehicles'. Except for the Deluxe models which had colored wheels.
Technically it could have colored wheels as an accessory.

Interesting. So a high point restoration in 1990 is now chopped liver because the Standards changed?

There was a major revision between MAFCA and MARC in 2016, and all high point restoration are now restored to the 2016 revisions. Not chopped liver liver by any means.

Hessen Blue exterior with Grey checked interior would make a good looking car.

My opinion,

Hi Brent:

I am in the process of painting my Model A. What brand of paint did you go with when you painted your Lombard Blue A? Also, if you could send a few pictures to [email protected], I will appreciated it!

Thx - Bob
