How to properly tighten wing nuts

I recently replaced the windshield and frame on my 1931 Roadster Pickup and I can't seem to be able to tighten the wing nuts so that the stanchions dont try to fold while i am driving. Any ideas on how to properly tighten the wing nuts?

Are you using lock washers ?

I did use lock washer, but under the sockets, is that the correct location, or should it be directly under wing nut?

I found that on my 31 Roadster, the repro wing nuts would not accommodate enough thread to actually tighten on the stanchions. A couple of stainless flat washers under each one solved the problem. I don't know if the problem was created by incorrect depth of the wing nuts or wear in the pivot sockets, etc.

Make sure you have all the pieces. There should be a retaining nut to hold the cone to the windshield post, this also helps lock the stud so it does not loosen.


Repro parts may have issues. It appears to me the system uses tapered cones (and a tapered rim on the 1930-31) which should have a matching taper on the post. If the tapers are correct the posts will lock to the cones (and 1930-31) lower posts with very little pressure from the wingnut (similar to how a Morse taper bit friction locks to a drill spindle). Adjustments may need to be made.

Note the washer under the wingnut, not authentic but helps prevent damage to paint or polish of the windshield posts.

I use O-rings works perfectly in holding the windshield without any slippage on my 31 Tudor.

Just looked at that catalogue page and it reminded me, do they make a electric or vacuum wiper for the roadster? When the top is on, I can run neither a manual wiper or have a clamp on mirror. My windshield frame is not drilled for a wiper and even if it was, the wood header for the top comes down in front of the upper frame leaving no room for the blade and it's attaching parts. This is my first open car, never had a problem with the sedans.

Hello, the wood header should have recess cut on to clear the wiper motor, if I can find a picture will post it , most of the original roadsters I seen have chrome plated vacuum wipers on them , mine was replaced with an aftermarket electric one .

Hello, couldn’t find picture of header for my car but did find one on internet, shows the cut outs for the wiper motor, note cutouts are on both sides to accommodate wiper on a right hand drive car .
