Default engine/transmission VIN number

Trying to find My Engine/Transmission VIN Number.
Want to see if they match the VIN number on my frame.
The two locations I know of seem to be blank? I guess I have to remove the floor plate for the transmission and look there? Too bad, I just finished putting my front rubber floor mat down. Is there room for me reach up and trace the number with pencil and paper?

It's not on the transmission as that applies only to V-8s. It would normally be on that rectangular raised area on the flywheel housing that shows in the your photo.

Frank, there is no reason to remove the front rubber floor mat. The number can be seen clearly from the engine compartment without removing anything. See my finger in the attached photo of the flywheel housing. I noticed in your photo you also circled the rectangular pad on the side of the block. There should be no number on this pad on the Model B block. If it is a number on in this pad on a Model B block someone added it after the vehicle left the factory. Model A engines used a pad in the same location to number the block.

A flashlight held at a low angle sometimes helps. Tracing with a pencil sometimes works. Some people have posted about using acid to bring out the numbers like the police use it to bring out the numbers on guns where the numbers have been ground off. When the numbers are stamped they alter the grain structure of the metal and the acid will bring it out.

getting real close with a led mflashlight and rubbing with my finger number are begging to appear....They appear same as on the frame, with the 4 numbers appearing I will continue rubbing. The numbers are along the front edge with the B being to the left. I will continue to rub and get all the numbers.

Thanks for your help.

GOT IT!
Seems like the oils from my fingers were exposing the stamped numbers.
All of them match the frame.
Didn't know I was that oily! I stay away from fried foods!
Fantastic to see that my engine matches my frame.
The guy that sold me the car said it had original engine...
I am happy...

Thanks you guys for help.
I have to realize that these number don't just jump out at you...
King of like reading a mammogram. Very hard to see...

NOT necessarily! You've only proven it has the original STARTER HOUSING. DD

This frame near the steering column is the only other place I know of, but someone else may know another place.
You should remove the paint and try to see the numbers if they are not there.

on this board mentioned that there may be a way of applying acid to etch the numbers visible because of the pressure used to punch the metal.
I once used a type of acid to make visible dates on buffalo nickels where the date was totally gone. Again something about the pressure changing the metal underneath even if the surface is sanded smooth. Investigate before you apply any acids and in a very small area to reveal on number at a time.

The instructions from Dearborn to the assembly plants was that the three locations were only for passenger car frames and only one for commercial and truck frames. Since all of the commercial vehicles used the same basic frame as the passenger cars, that could explain why only one was encountered. As the numbers were stamped by hand, the other explanation is human oversight or error.

Check VanPelts site for typical locations. There are three, front between front crossmember and firewall, in the area of the door pillar and near the frame hump up over the rear axle.
