Distributor/oil pump spring removal
I'm in the process of removing the cam from my '30 coupe. I'm into the valve spring area. The distributor has been removed. I've read Andrew's book about how to remove the spring on the distributor/oil pump drive but I must be having brain fade. I can't figure out what he means. He says to lift (drop?) the spring by half-an-inch, the spring will come out and the drive can be removed. I can't figure out how than can happen. Would somebody be able to help me with this? I'm stumped!
Once having got the spring and drive out does the oil pump drive just lift out? Ken Eastern Ontario |

Re: Distributor/oil pump spring removal
As I recall there is a roll pin about 1" below the top of the shaft that when removed will allow the shaft to lean and allow the shaft to drop in the block. I believe all other valve springs can be compressed for spring removal with a regular spring compressor. The oil pump drive has nothing to due with timing so if it falls out then just put it back in through the access plate or when installing the pan. If I am right don't forget to put the roll pin back in.

Re: Distributor/oil pump spring removal
I hope I am understanding the problem correctly. If you are talking about the spring that holds the pump/distributor drive and the swpring top rests against the top of the valve chamber--
With the distributor out, reach down with needle nose pliers and pull the drive shaft out through the dist hole. With the shaft out, give the top of the spring a good jerk with pliers. |
