Do it all the time using gun blue/black. Just make sure that parts are degreased and rust free. Works best if parts are warmed up a bit. It will work on cad plated stuff without removing the plating.

And I usually chuck the bolts in my lathe and turn the "grade markings & Plant stamps" off the heads before doing so! Or a bench grinder can do it too & a little sanding afterward

Can you get the Parkerizing products locally from a gun shop ? I see them advertised online, but I would rather skip the shipping if possible.

I have parkerized a lot of things over the years (nuts, bolts, brackets etc.) you must start with unplated items and then media blast them for the solution to have a "tooth" to adhere to. Works very well and only takes a few minutes in the solution.

I believe that you are referring to Ford's S2 finish (raven), not S7, which is cadmium plating.

Here's a link to a guy that worked on a 60's Ford. http://68vert.blogspot.com/search?q=phosphate

He experimented with various phosphating procedures and came up with what he thought was the best solution.

Used to get it at Walmart. Also any store that carries gun related stuff.

My experience has been that the finish will rust fairly quickly if not kept oiled.
Not so practical for driven cars sorry to say.

One could always save the hassle and buy the correct fastners with the correct finish from Roy Nacewicz at fordbolts.com

Buy a spray can of black interior dye and save yourself alot of time, for the larger parts and bolts as well. Just make sure you prep them before hand. Life is getting shorter!

Those bolts are nice and look correct but the black finish doesn't last on a car that's exposed to the road regularly. One of our customers has a '32 Vicky that had 100's of dollars worth of Roy's hardware on it. One year later every single chassis fastener was rusty orange. He ended up taking on the tedious task of removing all of them, wire brushing every bolt/nut/lock washer and painting flat black.

I think you all keep your cars a lot cleaner than Henry originally intended. If your old Fords were allowed to leak oil/lube/grease as they are supposed to, those fasteners wouldn't rust.
