Re: overdrive conversion
Now that I think about it, I believe "Greg58" is correct about reversing the actual rubber over steel transmission mount. Because of the configuration of the rear mounts on these cars, you should not have to move the actual crossmember.

Re: overdrive conversion
The distance from the bell housing to the rear mount on the tail shaft is 11 1/2 inches on the original 3 speed. On the new overdrive trans. the same measurement is 17 1/2 inches. So the O/D rear mount is 5 inches further back even though both units measure 24 inches in total length. At this point i'm not sure what year the O/D trans is. I'le try to send pictures of the O/D unit.

Re: overdrive conversion
Greg 58-- Thanks for the picture, obviously my O/D trans is not a 51, only difference appears to be location of rear mount- off by 5 inches.

Re: overdrive conversion
Look at the side cover, you have to have the clutch mount below the 1/reverse arm. 49,50 and 51 have it. 52 up had hanging pedals.

Re: overdrive conversion
Bill if your mount is facing rearward, how close would it be facing forward on the O.D. trans?

Re: overdrive conversion
I have no idea what you have, maybe a Mercury or truck trans.

Re: overdrive conversion
I wonder if it came from a convertible, I know the frame was beefed up.

Re: overdrive conversion
Bill if you can find one it is what our cars need, my car is totally different with overdrive. I Don't have a tach but the at 60 mph in overdrive sounds like it did at 45 mph with the old trans.

Re: overdrive conversion
I just had a thought. I know that the Victoria was a hurry-up project to come up with a model to compete with Chevrolet's new Bel Air hardtop that came out the previous year. They basically made it by putting a hard top on a convertible. In this vein, does anyone know for sure if the Victoria has the same frame as the convertible? If it does, it opens up a brand new nest of snakes regarding OD transmissions.
As an aside, for a cobbled-together last minute effort, in my opinion they are the best looking shoebox Fords produced. |

Re: overdrive conversion
Don't be too quick to give up! Having overdrive is well worth the effort! This rear mount difference was dealt with quite often back in the day. I personally never did one, but did hear how it was commonly done. Unfortunately, I don't remember how!! Junkyards back then dealt with this and it may have even been covered in the Hollander Interchange Manuals they all had. Try a big city Public Library. I know the Phoenix Arizona City Library had them a few years ago.
