Re: Any Mfg's Make 1949 Mercury Woodie Fuel Tanks?
IN a word NO...
unless 49 is unique.. it used a rectangular tank that was also used in 1950 wagons (and 51?) the tank itself is the same as the 1946 -1948 ford car tanks.. HOWEVER the filler inlet pipe is at a SLIGHTLY different angle.. Years ago i had a 1950 wagon parts car, someone had contacted me about this problem, but the tank in the car I had was BAD, however comparing it to the 46 car tank I had, I knew they were very very close. I suggested at that time the best course of action would be to modify a new tank to fix this problem.. unfortunately I don't know if that problem were ever resolved..

I would try and contact Tanks inc in Iowa, if currently operating. They might have what you need, I went with a larger gallon poly tank for my 39 and the fit was perfect and the extra volume is a nice to have reserve.
Good luck and let us know how you make out. |

Should be the same as 49-51 Ford/Merc wagons. These have the same platform. Should be able to find one on a parts car. Corrosion can be repaired and/or coated over. Go west young man. A custom tank won't fit right, have sender problems and cost big bucks. Join the NWC (National Woodie Club) and put a free add in their classified. You'll want to join anyway.

As 39portlander mentions, Tanks Inc, 877-596-3842, www.tanksinc.com might nave something available. I know they make '41-'48 Ford, '39-'48 Mercury and '49-'51 Mercury car tanks. I do know however that Woodies are a different animal. If the '46 Ford tank will work with modifications as Jeff mentions that might be the way to go.

Personally, I would not use a fuel tank made out of wood......

Re: Any Mfg's Make 1949 Mercury Woodie Fuel Tanks?
Appriciate all the heads up for info the fuel tank. I actually do have a 49 merc woody fuel tank in very good condition that is clean inside and was pulled from
a car in 1980. Its been kept in my garage storage since and i was trying to figure out if its worth selling. If there is no companys that are making them, i guess i have something worth listing/selling. thank you all for the info. |
