tightening cam gear
Is there any other way to hold the model A cam from turning when torquing the cam gear besides the gear itself against the crank gear?

Re: tightening cam gear
Wad up a little soft rag and poke it in where the teeth meet. Bill W's Ghost

Re: tightening cam gear
I like to leave the side cover off and use a clamp on the cam gear.

Re: tightening cam gear
Ditto on what Bill W's Ghost says. I save the wood like Steve Norcal says to use for on my Harley's primary chain.

Re: tightening cam gear
If you are doing it in a vise, soft jaws work great along with a strap wrench as a back-up to keep it from turning.

Re: tightening cam gear
If it is an aluminum or bronze cam gear, I do it the way Bills ghost does. If it is a fiber gear, I do it George Millers way, so as not to fracture or break the weak gear teeth.

Dandy idea! I never thought of that one. Chief always said, "There's more than one way to skin a cat!" He often also said, "The easiest way is the best way if it does the job PROPERLY!" Don't ever use an impact wrench on a cam gear nut, and don't ask me why I say that +*%$&#Bill W's Ghost

Re: tightening cam gear
I use an impact all the time, but only with the cam in a bench vise.

Re: tightening cam gear
There is more than 1 way to skin a cat, but, no matter how you do it, you are not going to get the cat to like it!

Re: tightening cam gear
The rag method above is a realy bad idea regardless of the cam gear material.
Use the clamp method with a flat bar of steel or aluminum clamped on the rim of the gear. Dan |
