Default Small spanner in crankcase??

No. It could not be. BUT ever so often - now and then - i hear a very gentle metallic hammering sound. Like at tiny soft hammer binging on a cast aluminium bell some where inside engine. Only noticeable at slow idle. Engine performs well. Oil pressure checked ok. Had manifold head of a month ago.

What can it be??

If your distributor has a vacuum brake, you might check the piston. It could be rattling.Just a thought.

Could be that pipe on underside of fuel pump stand has come loose and bouncing on the cam shaft.

Check post No. 17 in this thread: http://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193438. My engine was making bad noises as well but it was a harmless issue I fixed in short order.

Admiral! Thats it! There can be no doubt. Seeing that rod and loose tube fits perfectly to the sound I hear. And also makes sense because I had the top off a month ago - and was a bit confused as to this tube... Learning!

I can pull the top, or leave for now. Is this right? It won't be harmfull?

Great car, by the way!!

Will a loose tube affect oil pressure?

This smaller diameter tube is an interference fit in the bottom of the aluminum fuel pump/oil filler stand. The tightness of this fit can change over time, and allow this tube to come loose and wind up sitting on top of the umbrella looking part on the early style fuel pump rods. This interference fit on this assembly could be increased and/or some locktite applied to make sure this tube stays in place.
I'm not sure that welding this smaller tube to the baffles inside of the larger tube, that it passes through, would be the best way to fix this problem as was mentioned earlier in a previous post on this same subject. Also, if you ever wanted to change the intake manifolds, a baffle tube length change may also be required, which means welding up another small tube and baffle tube assembly.
