Truck rear axle with torque tube
We were give a decent looking rear axle with parallel spring mounts and obviously no provision for radius rods. But it appears to be set up for a torque tube as the pinion is 6 spline. I always thought truck pinions were tapered and keyed for the yoke and open drive shaft.

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
Or...someone assembled that unit using passenger car banjo with jailbar tubes. Why??

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
It's just possible someone didn't quite like that transverse spring set-up. DD

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
Is it possible somebody added the spring mounts and used it under a trailer??

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
You should remember that the torque tube set-ups used the transverse spring. The rear articulated in an arc about the transmission/u-joint connection. The elliptical spring set-up probably does allow the rear end to move fore/aft, which is where the sliding splines at the drive shaft front yoke come into play. I believe you have a 'mongrel' (put-together) rear end there. Lots of good parts for spares there. Or, a candidate for a light trailer. DD

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
Having an automotive background, I need to ask are you sure a truck banjo casing would not have the drain hole? Surely in the interest of commonality, the same banjo casing would have been used across the board???

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
Ya know Mart, I kind of jumped on that one thinking something else. You are likely correct, as I can actually think of no GOOD reason for Ford to have tooled-up a different banjo section. Merry Christmas across the pond, my friend! DD

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
My 38 1.5 ton has a banjo rear with a closed torque tube and parallel springs. Unsure of a drain hole it's under the cab as I am mid stride of rebuilding the trans and engine. Might be a big truck. It has steady rods on it from the rear end to the torque tube.

Re: Truck rear axle with torque tube
All the big truck rear axles I've seen look like this unless they are two speed.
