Whirring noise .. from I don’t know where
Hi. My 41 coupe is making a whirring noise and I need help to pin it down. So 6V new generator (replaced the older one about 3 months ago) water pumps are sealed bearing units from van pelt. A new belt went on when the pumps went in about a year or so ago. The belt is at the correct tightness per the 41 handbook . 1 inch deflection midway between generator and water pump pulley. So on start up it idles perfect no noise . When she warms up and I have driven the car for some time . When i idle the car in park and give it some gas to a higher RPM she makes the noise . Most times it lasts about 10 seconds and it’s gone and back to a noiseless idle. Other times it’s sustained until I turn the engine off and start her up again and it’s gone. I put belt dressing on the fan belt and the noise still occurs. It will make a whirring sound then it sounds like the belt gains traction and it stops and idles with no noise . Any ideas ? Time for a new belt?

Start off with a sanity check. Does it make the same noise when the belt is removed? At least that would prove the noise is belt related (or not). Mart.

Long shot. Be sure you have enough free play in your clutch, and that the return spring on the throw out bearing is working. The test is to put your foot on the clutch when the noise is happening. If the throw out bearing is singing, that will change the noise; probably make it go away.

Re: Whirring noise .. from I don’t know where
I struggled w/that annoying problem for a few yrs . I would spray some belt dressing spray on the belt & it would temporarily go away . Tried different belt tensions . Finally I bought a new belt from NAPA . Problem gone . Just wish I had tried that sooner ! - F F

When it's making the noise, hold a broom handle up against your ear and then press end of the handle up against the generator or whatever else. It will act like a doctors stethoscope and you'll know what's making the noise.

Re: Whirring noise .. from I don’t know where
I am in medicine so I grabbed my stethoscope and listened to the generator while the noise was happening and it wasn’t present there. It was normal.

Long shot,I once had a starter bendix contact the ring gear intermitantly
New bendix fixed it. It made clics and whirrs. Took a while to find it. John

Re: Whirring noise .. from I don’t know where
So I ran the motor minus the belt, the gen and new water pumps weren’t in play. On higher RPMs the noise was there lasted for 10 seconds then went away. Gassed it again noise came back for seconds then gone. I seemed to have isolated to the bottom fan pulley. It’s not touching anything . The noise sounds like a low whooshing . I have no oil pressure issues no fuel issues no over heating issues . It doesn’t happen at idle only on higher RPMS and even then I won’t do it.. I got a new gen, new Napa belt and it’s still there . Any ideas? Bearing?

Re: Whirring noise .. from I don’t know where
