Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
Installed my 59a engine in the 34 pickup today but the rear engine/trans mount holes don’t align with forward most set of tapped holes in the frame saddle. They do however align with the center set of untapped holes. Front engine mount bolts are installed using engine mount adapters that are copies of Ford ones. The engine cannot go any more forward or these front bolts will not align.
Is it customary to tap these center holes for the rear mount ? |

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
To paraphrase Sir Walter Scott, (1808), Oh how our problems multiply, when we begin to modify.
Just sayin.

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
Originally there were no second pair of holes in the top of the center cross member. With a four-cylinder engine the rear transmission mount is reversed and uses the same pair of holes in the cross member as with a V8.
Mike's recommendation is the way to proceed. P.S. Ford never made the front adapters like those you are using. They're strictly a post-production aftermarket creation and they are likely to be equally the problem as the reproduction rear mount. |

I think Kube has the solution

cas3,
I stand corrected. What year(s) Mercury are you referring to? |

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
The 49 mercury engine that I put in the 46 truck came with similar u adapters, they allowed the odd mercury pumps to fit in place of the original engine

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
.
Something else to consider on '33-'34 is the fact that depending on whether 4-cylinder or V8, there are two different length drive shafts & torque tubes. This was taken care of during original assembly by reversing the rear mount....NOTE how the ears for bolts are not centered. So, if you miss the CORRECT REAR holes, you may have a real dilemma on your hands with shaft & t-tube fitment. You might consider making a pair of front mounts similar to the V8-60 mounts, or like in the drawing BELOW! |

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
I removed the front engine mount bolts and was able to pry or pull the whole drive train forward enough to get the ears or tab holes on the rear engine/Trans mount to align with the proper threaded forward holes. Now I will need to modify my front mounts by most likely drilling new holes on the bottom side of the homemade adapters so the bolt that comes up through the frame will work.

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
Check the height of the front pulley bolt, it should line up with the hand crank loop or else you run out of room for the fuel pump stand. Thats why I made my own mounts, those merc mounts were too high if I remember correct

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
I think the alignment of your transmission bolts is not perfect is because you are using the 1951 Merc U shaped spacers.

I thought these u shaped spacers were designed specifically for a 59a engine in earlier Fords such as 33-4. |

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
There is not room for the bolt and the crank loop when putting a later block in the 34, or others with the short crank. Most folks cut the loop off. I hate to wreck good parts, so I used the sadle/loop part from a model A. Then, you just have to guess a bit. The hand crank is about a 3/4" shaft, and it just clears the flat where the loop was, and hits the bolt dead center. If the motor is too high, the fuel pump stand is not parallel to the firewall and you run out of room for the breather cap. On mine, it was so close that I made a taller tube higher that the shelf on the firewall to make it easier to add oil.

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
Did that swap 2 weeks ago into my 34 PU; Photos Merc type adapters in front. Those adapters are facing the rear, turn them sideways like mine are? Newc

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
NOTICE that Newc's motor mount is NOT bolted to the front cross member. Looks like it's been moved back.

Re: Rear engine/trans mount holes misalignment
My dad always called those u-shaped front spacers "Mercury mounts". I think they come from these '50-'51 Merc pumps with their higher mounts. He was going to use a pair of those spacers mounts to stick a 59A in his '33 pickup. I might need to do it on my '34 pickup too. I just have not gotten that far yet. I have found two pairs of those mounts so far in dads' Ford mystery boxes. They were also made aftermarket. I'm pretty sure Hurst sold a motor mount adapter just like the Merc mounts.
