Default head gasket material

I thought I would start another thread for this. My apologies if this has been covered but I could not find it in the search option.

But from the head gasket dealing with short piece of wire I got to thinking. When the car originally came out it had the copper/asbestos gasket. I assume that when the 'B' head came out it had the same gasket. So why then do the vendors recommend the newer felpro style gasket? I will try the wire method the next time around if I go back to the copper style.

Just curious,

Mike

I'm not sure if this is the info that you are asking for but I'll try .. The model B had a different combustion chamber. The difference in the gasket used with the model B heads was mostly on the valve side. Also it is important not to have gasket hanging out past the chamber opening in the head . The copper clad Felpro gaskets such as the third and fourth revision are big bore gaskets. Most model A & B engines have been bored more than once over the past 80 years. Many of the older gaskets would overlap the bore if the cylinders were bored over sixty thousants and this is one reason why a big bore gasket is needed in many cases. I've only used the third revision Felpro gaskets. I have read somewhere that the difference in the fourth revision Felpro gasket is that it has a silicone coating on the edges of the filler material where it meets the water jacket .

Sorry about that, Vince. I did not realize that was you and what you wanted me to do. I also misspoke as I was thinking more along the lines of the police head. My main question was more along the lines of the materials that were used. But it looks like they changed material (copper to composite) when they upped the comp ratio. As usual a great site Vince.

Thank you,

Mike
