Default 1947 Crank pulley

This crank pulley I believe was fabricated. the front of the pulley is missing a piece now. My question is, is there suppose to be another piece that fits between the crank and the back of the crank pulley? Is it inside the timing cover? I tried to get a replacement for it but the new pulley has roughly a 2" sleeve that comes off of the back of the crank pulley. New to flatheads and to this site. Any help would be appreciated. I have taken a couple of pics here but I will also try to get some of the front of the engine as well. Thanks20160403_105856.jpg

The original pulley had a sleeve with a spiral groove in it that slid in between the timing cover and pan seal. If you use a modern seal you need to use the smooth sleeve that is now being made. I have the spiral sleeve machined off of the pulley when using the smooth sleeve.

Do you have any pics? So are you saying you take the original crank pulley and machine the back side off?

The original pulley has a sleeve made onto the back side that slides over the crankshaft and into the engine sandwiched in between the timing cover and the oil pan. Originally there was a rope seal used. You can use it this way if you like. I prefer the modern one piece seal. Since the original pulley sleeve has the spiral grooves that move oil back into the oil pan with the rope seal design, it is better to use a smooth sleeve so that the spiral grooves do not wear out the new one piece modern seal.

To achieve this I take the pulley to a machinist and have him remove the appropriate amount of old spiral sleeve then slide the new smooth sleeve over the crankshaft followed by the pulley. Everything will draw up nice and tight with the pulley nut.

I don't have a photo of this at the moment but could possibly get one or someone else may post one.

I am guessing you are talking about a '47, 59 series engine with a stock crankshaft? If so, the stock lower crankshaft pulley looks like this.....

That makes sense now. Also thanks for the pics. Hopefully I can get this thing back together since the weathers getting nice. Would you have a guess on what it would cost to machine of part of the old sleeve?

It cost me about $50 to get that done, locally. They also cut the slot in the smooth sleeve for the pin on the crank gear. Seems expensive but if it keeps the front main from leaking oil it's worth it for me. The smooth sleeve does come with the key way slot cut, however. I got my smooth sleeve from Van Pelt Sales.

Should I be assuming there must be the old sleeve still on the end of the crankshaft since the crank pulley that's broke looks like it was possibly machined down on the back side

Your pulley looks pretty much home made. Check your crankshaft end for any remnants of a sleeve. There should be nothing left on the end of the crank. You will know as soon as you look at it. I would find another stock pulley and go from there.
