Used pistons
I have some good used pistons that I would like to reuse in another block. No scraping and are clean in the ring grooves. (will not reuse rings) This particular set is 3 3/16 +.030.
When I measure the piston 90 degrees to the pin, I have .015 smaller on top of the piston and .004 smaller on the bottom of the skirt. Can these be used as the machinist will have the pistons for boring and honing to size and clearance. There sure are a lot of little marks on a micrometer LOL Thanks — Fourdy |

Re: Used pistons
i have bored smaller for used pistons before, you have to have some more clearance than if they were new---the rings have to be "file fit" to the cylinder size
i have also reused rings----cheap cast iron not worth it, but some of the Mercedes are over 100$ a piston---some of those I have put back in with over 200,000 miles and gotten over 100,000 more miles use the last A engine i put together with used pistons ended up bored to .027 ---not all machinists will be comfortable doing it though |
