Re: Progress pics - 36 1/2 ton pickup
Got the bed put on yesterday. Underside has new oak boards and the bed frame is powdercoated. Got anxious to see it on the chassis and didn't stop to take photos, but since this is only the mock-up phase the bed will come off again to get painted and I'll shoot some pics then.
Its kinda a b!tch installing an assembled bed onto the chassis by yourself with no hoist or lift to work with! Maybe to remove it I'll back the truck into the garage and hook some small pulleys to the joists. Then I can lift the bed and roll the truck out from under it. So here's what its looking like today: bed test fit.jpg |

Re: Progress pics - 36 1/2 ton pickup
Are the bed rails supposed to be open on the ends or crimped over?
All 4 corners on my bed are folded over. Is this just from abuse/wear and tear or did Ford try to close off the ends? |

As predicted, attaching screw eyes to the ceiling joists allowed me to use 4 ratchet straps and lift the bed off the frame. Flipped it over and started fine tuning the underside bed frame. Hammer and dollied a few dents, drilled out a few rivets, welded some cracks. Those boards are pre-cut red oak from Menards. They are a little thick, maybe 1/8" thicker than original. That makes it tough to fit them under and into the bed frame. Three coats of polyurethane clear, sanded in between coats, should keep them looking like new for the next 100 years. |

Re: Progress pics - 36 1/2 ton pickup
Scott, I'm curious, did you have to remove the head board to slide the old boards out ? I did on mine and the ones I took out were maple, and I believe 3/4 " thick. I could have cheated and only put a repair piece just across the front but felt it best to remove all and sand blast the bottom of the pan and repaint before new maple back. Came out pretty well as did yours. Looks like a nice job over all !

Re: Progress pics - 36 1/2 ton pickup
Bob,
After I removed the subframe I slid the boards back towards the tailgate just enough to clear the front lip, then was able to lift them out. This is the longer pickup bed from a 37 that I am putting on my 36. It has a metal bed floor. I blasted the whole thing top and bottom and i had the framework powder-coated. Note there are 10 rivets that hold the frame to the bed, and since I don't have the tools or skill to duplicate the factory rivets some 1/4-20 bolts will have to do. Here is the bed without the frame: image.jpg Notice the frame leaning against the wall in the background |

Re: Progress pics - 36 1/2 ton pickup
When I made new "bumpers" for the back of the Ford flatbed on my '49 F4, I turned the heads on some 1/4-20 grade 8 bolts to look like rivet heads. When I installed them I used some permanent Loctite on the threads. The "bumpers" look like they are riveted on.

Did you put a new door skin on the drivers door? You are making good progress from what you started with.

Driver's door is full skin from the beltline down, passenger door is just the bottom panel. |
