Front crank and timing modern seal
How do you put modern seal on front crank and timing cover

The engine must be out of the car. You have to have the sump (pan) off, crank shaft at least lowered and the front pulley off. Be prepared to replace the front pulley. If the surface where the seal runs is not in very good condition, the seal won't seat properly. Once timing covers are off, gouge out the old rope seal and clean the groove in the timing cover and the sump. A little sealer ( I use silicone) in the groove of the timing cover, fit the seal over the crankshaft (with pulley fitted)and lower it back into place. Refit the sump and put everything else back where you found it.
I have probably left out some detail but that's about it. IMO, unless you have a significant leak from the front seal, I'd leave it alone. Replacing it is a lot of work.

I had the modern seal in the front of my old engine. It leaked. They wear out and the lip, which should be a knife edge, gets rounded. The block and pan are not meant for the modern seal so it requires a lot of sealer. The modern rope seals work good and will last a long time. Regardless of which seal you use, the area where it rubs should be polished. It is also possible for oil to leak past the pulley at the crankshaft so some people use a sealant there.

One of the best cures for a front seal leak is to use an original type rope seal and a front pulley with a reverse scroll. This one from H & H Antique Engines. http://handhantique.com/parts/parts3/parts3.html
I run a Murray Harmonic Balancer with a reverse scroll and since installing it almost 3 years ago I have not had a drop of oil from the front. One of the many advantages of running a Murray Pulley, IMO. Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 01-15-2023 at 01:04 PM. |
