Re: Price of cars in 1934
Thanks Steve, very interesting, but the top speeds for many of the cars is a little optimistic I think. 75 mph in model A ford, or 100 mph in a 34 V8, WOW !! Regards, Kevin.

Re: Price of cars in 1934
My old Model A could get up to almost 32 miles per hour on a nice flat smooth road! Of course, it took a while to get to that amazing speed.

Look at that 1932 Marmon. It is a beast! Must have rode beautifully with that long wheelbase. Wonder who was buying those in '32 for that price.

Re: Price of cars in 1934
Ironically not one of them would have proved to have been an investment if bought new. £10,000 in 1934 would have bought a mansion house....or two... in Mayfair (London)......and today.....£25,000,000
In terms of "classic car" investment I think the wisest purchases were made in the early 1970's when the expression "classic car" was just entering our vocabulary. "Classic" example.....Ferrari GTO advertised in Motor Sport for sale in 1972 was £7,000.....cost of our first house. Price of car today....£10,000,000....value of house £375,000 Someone got lucky ! |

Tested the A roadster up against the cops radar trailer. Hit 52 MPH on the flat. Speedometer read 52 also. No fun to drive at that speed. It likes about 35-40, and prefers back roads.

The 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe that cost $702 then would cost only about $12,000 today according to an inflation calculator.
Those coupes were really very good deals. |

Re: Price of cars in 1934
It would appear that the prices for cars in the 1930's was a good deal.. That is if you had the money..
In 1939 the economy had slid back into a recession, ergo; the Great Depression was a recession, (1930/32) Which slid deeper into a deep depression, (1932/37), then the economy slid again because of poor programs that the government put in place, a depression on a recession, then a recession on the depression equals... The Great Depression. Many people have feared that the recent deep recession was going the same way.. The cost of a new car in 1939, $702. was more money than the average persons annual wage.. Nothing changes, the value of the dollar just gets more zeros added to it.. I bought a new Olds station wagon in 1963 for $4,700 out the door.. At the time I had three kids, a house payment of $89.00 and was making less than 5k a year as a general foreman for a company... My savings grace was the company pickup that the company supplied me, I was allowed to drive it to and from work, plus during the day to carry out my duties... Is somebody lamenting about how good the good old days were.... I hope not..

blucar:
When most of us talk about the good old days it ='s Living @ home rent free / sock hop's / A&W Burgers / Drive in's / 1st Dates / Etc. Etc. No one ever says how they liked working 2 jobs / Having a house payment / or having to do without so your Kids could live @ home rent free / go to sock hops / give the kids $$ to get a A&W Burger / go to a Drive in / or go on there 1st date!!!!! |

Re: Price of cars in 1934
My original Bill of Sale from 1933 was $700 and change for the Deluxe Fordor.
As far as the good ol' days, I can see that it was a period in time without the threats that we now experience with all of the craziness going on. People didn't live with a fear in the back of their mind with a simple trip by air. A High School friend of mine that I played Pop Warner football with, was on the first plane that struck the Twin Towers. I can't imagine the fear that he experienced while on that plane. Those are the kinds of things I think we think about when people refer to the good ol' days. A simple life, a rewarding life, and a life without fear. God Bless You All, and Merry Christmas! Hope that we all find NOS Ford parts under our tree this year. |
