Default Grease/Lubrication Question

Gentlemen, I am attempting to grease my car for the first time, just wanted to make sure that I am doing it right.

When I put the grease gun on the fitting and squeeze the handle grease does come out but it is mushrooming around the fitting, see picture. Just want to make sure that is correct.

Thanks

Nick

Nick
The fitting on the upper spring shackle looks to be a modern fitting. Is the lower one a modern or a zerk fitting? This may be your problem.

Those two fittings look the same, see picture below.

The fittings on the front spindle, second pic look different.

These are the two guns I have

your upper one is the original tapered style while the lower is a modern "snap on" style...

That'll happen. As long as grease goes thru to where and what it is supposed to go to all is well. In your first it looks as though grease is getting to the bushing.
If grease is not going thru the fitting to where it should go then something needs to be done to make that happen.

I've found some fittings that "look" like an Alemite fitting, but DON'T seal right.

I just went thru the grease process on my '29. I found that my problem was a very worn tip on the grease gun. As a result, the grease splayed out around the fitting. Have a friend who runs an automotive repair shop. We used his battery powered gun and greased everything properly. Even wiped up the bit of excess here and there. So now I'm going to get a new tip. When fitting correctly, it should take a little effort to put the tip on and pull it off the grease fitting.

I use my original gun that came with the car. No problem with the original zerks.

I do the same and it works great. A bonus is there is no coupler to wear out.

Hopefully the grease is going through and coming out "The other side" too. I would think your bloom at the fitting base is caused by a loose fitting that should be corrected.

Actually Bruce the problem was I was not getting the connector all the way on the fitting....now that I know how to do it the grease is squeezing out nicely from the other side.

I did find some bad fittings and ordered a new set from Snyder's this morning, Harry, the club member that helped me, gave me a full tutorial on the different types of fittings, some push in and some screw in, that was a big help.

As you guys always tell the newbies, hook up with a local club, amazing how much they can help.

Be sure you grease the main rear brake shaft. It is hidden between the fork of the rear radius arm. It faces forward. This is a heavily loaded bushing and needs attention often.
