o.k what is this for? 10x39 r/pinion matched
Going thru some ring and pinions to inventory(have had for some 40 years) and came across an odd one. 48-Center case with a 10 tooth pinion and the ring gear is 39 teeth. The pinion has the marking 10-39 and is ford script. Ratio 3:90 what is this for quicker off the line than 3:78? Anybody?. Thanks.

Doubt that Henry ever made a gear ratio specifically to be "quicker off the line".
Was probably for a heavier car application like a wagon etc. |

Might be overdrive type rear from a Lincoln. I don't think I've ever heard of 3.90:1 ratio in a Ford banjo type before. They did have them in some of the later 52 & 53 ford cars with the first type hogs head rear axle though

Couple of things to look at. See if the pinion and the crown have matching numbers as many legit sets do. Also look for a manufacturer name on them. Might even look at the old rod magazines for mention of that ratio being available from Getz or Republic. The hypoids for the Zephyrs were mostly 4.44 after '41. Can't rule out Columbia. Good luck: Fred A

Can you post pictures of the gears and case?
