In 1950 the average income per year was $3,210.00 and by 1959 was $5,010.00.
In 1950 a gallon of gas was 18 cents and by 1959 was 25 cents.

At least that is what thepeoplehistory.com site states

As with a lot of things, this would depend on location. In So. Il. the only time gas was two bits a gallon was when there was a gas war going on. Some times when a station ran out of regular, they would give you ethyl for the regular price. This was 1957 to1960.

Move the decimal one to the right and double the amount and you're close to today!

At my location during the gas wars and in the same 1957 time frame I remember 13¢ a gallon and they would clean your windshield and check the oil.
