36 lb engine
I had a good day yesterday ,I fellow racer rang me to see if I had a 94 carb part,
I had a few so told him to take what the needed. He came over with an old engine he didn't want and some parts for it.said to take them as they were of no use and it was going to be a garden ornament. I stripped the engine today,a 36LB engine std crank .020 bore ,nice valve seats,no cracks, also came with two gearboxes, one a heavy duty 4 speed with PTo and the other a heavy duty 3 speed.and a lucas starter motor, are they any good? the starter that is. Also fixed the horns on the 33, for ages I could get one or the other to work fine but not together, So I fitted a relay to the wiring for them, and they now work VERY loud. It was a simple job to fit the relay,I used a std 12v relay and used the horn push to earth the pull in part of the relay. My 33 is still 6v so that worked the 12 v relay fine Lawrie |

Re: 36 lb engine
Lawrie you did well with the 36LB engine, another one to store away.Is the Lucus starter 6v or12v ? I have a 12v one ,( maybe off a pommie pilot ? ) on my 34 it works real well.

Re: 36 lb engine
Lawrie,
The Lucas starters are good, better bendix spring setup, not prone to snapping like the American ones. The body is about 1" shorter, better header and steering box clearance if right hand drive. Drive is about 1" longer. Tooth count is different on bendix and it's (must use) matching flywheel, the Lucas setup has 144 tooth flywheel gear and 9 tooth starter gear, rather than 112 And 10 respectively for the American setup. Sump is also different where the starter fits through its hole, Lucas has an egg shaped hole, and starter register has a smaller od, American has round hole and bigger starter register. The 144 tooth flywheel can sometimes foul the inside of the engine bell extension on American blocks, it is slightly larger od than the 112 tooth one. As you can see, to use the Lucas starter you need matching flywheel and preferably sump, though the Lucas starter will bolt to the American sump, threads are the same distance apart, but it won't cent center properly due to the register areas not registering. Good score on the LB. Martin. |

Re: 36 lb engine
Great gift. I searched all over the U.S. East Coast for quite a while to find an LB to rebuid. Finally got one BUT not cheap.
BTW please send some of your warm weather over here. We had 2 inches of snow last night and treacherous black ice. Old Man Winter GO AWAY!!! Bruce/CT

Re: 36 lb engine
In light of Scooders info ,maybe the lucas starter should go to some one who needs it.
