Gas shutoff removal
Do I just disconnect the gas line from the shutoff then back out the fuel valve? Of course with a little container to catch any fuel that may be left in the tank after draining it.

Re: Gas shutoff removal
Okay, I have the shutoff valve off and there was no pencil filter when it dropped straight down. There was a little fitting as seen in the picture. The new pencil filter sits very loosely in the valve without that fitting. I don't see that you can press the filter into that fitting. No crud came out when I removed the valve. I also have a rebuild kit for the valve. Should I leave well enough alone and not mess with taking the valve apart? Does the pencil valve just sit in the fitting?

Re: Gas shutoff removal
That is what I did....it came out fine.
I used thread sealer on the new valve and let it cure for 24 hours...maybe overkill but no leaks.. And if you have one of those little filters with the standoff above the valve you may get more than just a few drops of fuel out when you remove the old valve...just be ready! |

Re: Gas shutoff removal
My pencil filter needed to be tapped into place. I held it with a pliers and tapped it down with a tack hammer..
Yours looks like it is already bottomed out.....I did replace my valve and it was a different style than yours..... |

Re: Gas shutoff removal
Well, shutoff valve is all cleaned up. The only marking on it is a stamped "B" or "8". I guess I will just let the pencil filter sit in the valve with a very loose fit and fill the tank slowly with gas.

Re: Gas shutoff removal
I don't know...there is a lot of sloshing that goes on in there...i know my loose filler screen keeps moving around and hanging up on the fuel float..
You might add a little silver solder to the neck of the screen, then file or sand it for a tight fit in the valve......rosin core would work too..clean it with rubbing alcohol after to remove flux.... |

Re: Gas shutoff removal
I'm thinking the first big bump you hit or the first time you fill the tank the filter will become dislodged. JMO

Re: Gas shutoff removal
Bob, Thank you for the tin foil tip. I cut a 1/2" x 12" band and wrapped the nozzle end of the filter and carefully turn it into the valve. It holds fairly firm.

Re: Gas shutoff removal
My shutoff valve hasn't got the filter on it. My line of thinking is you are better off trapping the shit at the sediment bowl than letting it build up in the tank. I do have the T setup under the tank as well and run an inline filter after the sediment bowl though. Every time I clean it(the T and sediment bowl) out there is less shit in it than the time before.

Re: Gas shutoff removal
I bought a repo shut off valve at a swap meet once and the hole was larger than an original shut off and the pencil filter was loose.
I did not use that valve, but instead bought a USA made one at Brattons. The pencil filter fit snug and the valve never leaked. Hopefully your shim will stay tight and wont come loose. |

Re: Gas shutoff removal
I find most are a nice fit, but I did have to use solder to tin one filter for a better fit.

Re: Gas shutoff removal
My last replacement was from Brattons and it fit perfectly snug and needed a slight tap. Wayne
