Stripped transmission gear pics
We don't often see this sort of damage, but someone managed to remove every single tooth from the main drive gear and about 7 or 8 teeth off the cluster gear. I don't think JB Weld is going to restore these............

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
That kind of carnage was fairly common back in the '50s and early '60s, when it was possible for "Randy Racer" to find a replacement trans in the junk yard for $5 or $10. DD

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
man, that must have been one hell of a power shift, ive seen a lot of cluster gears like that, matter of fact I did a few of those, but I never seen that many teeth off a main shaft, its a good clutch alignment tool now

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
my guess is the clutch was dropped at high rpms in low gear taking off a few teeth on the cluster gear, or a hard shift to second gear, then the broken teeth were pulled up to the main shaft gear by the oil, thus wedging the broken tooth in the gear and striping it, trans don't like odd bits of metal getting caught between the teeth on the main shaft and cluster gear

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
Now that's real talent. I've taken all the teeth off the second gear cluster but can't ever remember seeing anything quite like that. I don't think dental implants are going to help that one smile pretty again.

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
I'll take a guess: the broken teeth locked the cluster and the main kept spinning. A wonder the case isn't cracked.

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
Not even sure if we were told if the trans had any "issues" but we're expected to make it right again and that's what we'll do. I like Bruce's suggestion......sort of like tackling a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. And I just showed you the big chunks......there was a lot of tiny pieces in there too.

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
Quite often that will happen on a one two shift when you try to make it sound like you have a Lenco.

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
I actually did that twice in my 50 ford truck in high school. The third trans I changed the bellhousing and had no more trouble. Must of had an alignment problem. Gary

Re: Stripped transmission gear pics
This was a weekly occurance when I was young; it was a good thing Carmichel's Auto Parts in Excelsior, Minnesota was open until noon on Saturday; otherwise, we would have been begging for rides from our friends on Saturday night. We got really good at swapping transmissions and parts!
