Robert Paul in Yoder, CO does a nice job. We wrote him up in the Model A Times Summer 2005.

I bought two sets from Paul. His prices are very reasonable. I think I paid $55 a couple of years ago for each shock rebuilt (I had my own cores). I think he still rebuilds them. It usually takes a few months for turnaround. His contact info is:
Robert Paul
34175 Truckton Rd
Yoder, CO 80864 719-478-5102

I bought a set of 4 from him 2 years ago. He sent me the correct shocks for my June, 1930 Town Sedan. I, too, had to wait 3 months, but I'm VERY satisfied & it was a pleasure doing business with him.

I wrote this in another thread a couple days ago. I had Robert Paul build me a set of shocks in 1989 and they're still on the car today. One shock started to seep a little bit just months ago. That's after 21 years, and it's just a seep, not even a drip.

I also had a set built by John Holland, but that's just over a year ago. No problems yet. Robert does take longer for turn around, but is a bit cheaper. John's turnaround was no more than two or three weeks.

What about these rebuild kits all the online vendors sell - any good? Easy enough for a reasonable hobby mechanic?

I called Apple Hydraulics this morning, they said they rebuild them, turn around time 1 week, but they want 165.00 per shock.
Does that sound high to you guys?

The kits are ok, but if the internals are worn or if you do not have the proper tools and there are some required to remove the covers and locking ring, you will not get them apart without messing them up. Also if they are rusted they can be a real pain to get apart. Get a reputable rebuilder who has the tools and can fix any wear issues and will have a quality job. BTW when shipping them to the rebuilder get the flat rate boxes from the Post Office as costs a fortune to ship otherwise. Sent 7 shocks to get four good ones back and was about $10.00. PO said if shipped without flat rate would been close to $30.00 to mail. Remember you have to ship there and rebuilder has to ship back and you pay for both ways.

Apple sends your shocks to Oregon to M&S and hoses you in the process, I don't need a middle man to do my rebuilds so I just send them to M&S myself, usually about a month turn around but the lever shocks I send him are almost twice the size of the A's

When i started in this hobby some 40 years ago all i knew was M&S Shock rebuilders. Had 5 sets done for me. NO problems. Since then John Holland and Robert Paul names have pop up. "ALL" GOOD REPORTS!!!!! Apple Shocks i tried once on 1 shock to test the waters since they are about a hour or so drive. The price was,, like edzaha said $165.00 for 1. They cranked the cover so close to the base you don't see the gasket not even a thread.I think of postage now from my house and anything mailed west of the Mississippi river gets charged twice the cost. So for me i have 1 set to have done for my next car. John Holland is the closest to me.Of all the years i had 1 seep as Dave puts it and not a drop yet. And yes they caught it at French Lick meet. The only one out of 20 and it had to be at that time.:>)

I sent mine to Bert's in Denver and they turned them around pretty quickly. Well, they turned 3 of them around and had to sell me a core to get rebuilt since I sent them one that was so bad that they put it on their "wall of shame" for others to see. I visited there two years ago and they'd taken it down because the comments were so bad.....or so they said.
Bert's is great to deal with. http://modelastore.com/
