Transmission oil,I searched
Okay before I get a lecture I did search under transmission oil and 600wt and nothing. So if you don't want to answer could you at least tell me what key word will get me there? All I want to know is this.I am rebuilding the transmission right now on my '31.Basically pretty good shape except bearings which I have ordered and the "O" ring shafts for cluster. So with all this new stuff should I use the 600 wt.that Brattons and others sell or a good say summertime gear lube like I use in my '37 Ford.thanks for not berating me in advance.

Use the 600w oil. The thicker the oil, the more your gears will slow down between shifts.
Some owners use 50/50, 600w oil and STP. I happen to do that also. Enjoy. |

600W, 140 or 250 will work fine. I prefer 250.

Re: Transmission oil,I searched
Thanks for answers.I am glad I decided to go through the transmission, gears all good bearings not so good. One caged bearing inside cluster gear was broken and in pieces. No spacer was used and two long cage bearings in place instead of one short on.Supposedly this will work but entire end was worn off one cage and bearing came apart tearing up hardened shaft. You never know until you look.

Jim,be careful where you use that modern oil,you do not want to put it in a older car with brass synchronisers it will eat them up,got to use mineral oil in my 57 Studebaker,no sulfur content.

I use the 600w in everything but the engine, radiator and gas tank.

Re: Transmission oil,I searched
I use Lucas Oil Stabilizer in transmission. Very noticeable difference in feel of gears when shifting VS 600W. Also gears synchronize quicker.

When I search 600W I get 20 pages of posts. (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/searc...p=25) Remember it is NOT 600wt as in weight it is 600w as in the product line that Mobile oil sells.

Yellow metal can be effected by gear oil with sulfur.
Yellow metal, brass and bronze. This is not a myth. Spring steel can also be effected by some greases and oils. There is usually a reason manufacturers recommend a lubricant. |

Re: Transmission oil,I searched
The EP (Extreme Pressure) additives in some gear oils are activated by heat. It would be interesting to see the test in post #11 repeated, except keeping the gear oil at around 200 Deg F for an extended period of time.
