Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
No pics this time, you'll have to visualize. I'm trying to bolt my newly painted 4 dr body onto the frame and something keeps holding it up about 1/8 " over. It just won't lay down flat on the frame. The 1/8" welting is full frame length. With clearances cut around bolt heads. It sits down in the front, it's only the in the rearThe only things that seems to be holding the sills up are the two rear bumper brackets. Clamping hard and pulling it down with the frame bolts on the rest of the frame might solve one problem, but cause more (door fit for one). So, Should I shim the body sills and just pull it down, or what.
Additionally, I want to warn you all about "Classic Woods" body sills. It's a small thing. The three holes on each side for the front seat brackets (slider brackets) are drilled in too wide a pattern They are off about 1/2 inch, it makes the wooden seat frame not fit. Snyders lists about 3 4dr styles of front seats. do any of these have a different hole spacing where the slider brackets bolt to the frame? These bolts would be 5/16" X approximately 2 1/4 long 3 per side, 6 altogether Terry Last edited by Terry, NJ; 03-21-2016 at 03:03 PM. |

Terry, I assumed you checked to be sure your frame was not bent by the motor mounts?

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Fred, The bend would create a different pattern of bend. This is something holding the body up at the rear. The front is laying down where it should be. But then there's those pesky bumper brackets. They're connecting ok. How do I get them down an 1/8 to 5/32 so the body lays flat on the frame?

The bumper brackets and bracket to frame bolts should not be touching the body..

Just tighten it down, it'll be OK, that's what they did at the factory. Do we REALLY think ALL the stuff laid in PERFECT at the FACTORY? That's what NUTS/BOLTS are for-----------They were building a CHEEP/QUICK car. Bill Tight

LOL Bill, your right, hell either the body is warped or the frame is bent, start worrying when you cant get the doors aligned by shimming the body

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
I will second with D.J. someone on FB awhile back had the front ears on the rear bumper brackets on top of the frame. they go under the top flange of the frame. if they are on top of the frame, they will hit the sills.

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Frame sag at left motor mount will cause the right rear of the body to be to high.

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
NOPE, NOPE and NOPE The front ears/tabs of the bumper brackets are underneath the flange of the frame. and there is clearance for the bolt heads.? Both sides of the frame are up and touching the bumper brackets.
Uhhh, what do you mean by "Frame Hump" ? The only frame hump I can think of is the one under the rear seat and that's not bolted down. (Over the differential) This is becoming a real PITA! Oh well, When they go together too easy, something's not right. Gaawwwddd, This one's gonna be perfect! LOL Terry |

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
The body has been off of the frame and the wooden structure has changed shape. Do get to bothered by it. Bolt the body down and let it sit for a couple of week and you find that the body will settle to the frame. This is common on coachbuilt car. (wooden structure with metal panels.) After a couple of week you'll find the bolts will be loose in different areas. Then you can worry about shimming the body. I've restored some early cars with wooden structures and this isn't out of the norm. John Poole

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Is it possible when the body was resting off the frame that it bowed? Say for instance it was supported at the very front and rear that caused a sag in the middle of the body. And now it's not level?

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Barber, It would seem doubtful, but in light of what Bill W. and John Poole said, It may be and probably is. The sills are close to 2" thick Ash. I'm going to try what they said and pull it down with the bolts. Thanks to all !

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Don't force the body down. Spend the time to find out why the body is not lying correctly. There should be about a uniform 1/4" gap between the body and running board aprons. There should be a 1/4" thickness of rubber shim at each body to frame bolt.
If you force the body down onto the frame, I would expect you will have some horrible door and or hood alignment problems. Insert some 2x4 pieces of wood between the body and the frame, and look for the cause of the problem.

Put a "straight edge" on the bottom of the body and see if it's flat. I'm sure that the body was built on some kind of table that was flat and the parts were bolted too it.. |

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
Is it possible that when the car was in the body shop, the painter stepped on the area over the spring hump in the chassis and pushed it down, causing it to keep the body raised?

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
I definately am not a fordor expert, but possibly the places where the braces on the bottom of the subrails where the corner braces bolt on and attach to the bumper risers may need to be cut deeper. Rod

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
The body shop is my garage, I'm the painter, The piece with then hump is not bolted in yet, it's there but it's not holding anything. No the thing that's holding the body up is the rear bumper brackets. You can see that it's the only place of contact. These guys have got me worried about this 1/4" I'm using a 1/8 welt now and I know when it came off there was no 1/4" rubber. There was about 1/8 of non descript material, all scrunched down and hard from 79 years (2009) of bumpy roads etc.

Re: Body to frame! Anyone ever have this?
You could try the old trick used to check weatherstrip fits around doors on later cars... put narrow sheets or strips of paper along the frame rails and lower the body. Where the paper can't be pulled out easily is where your contact is. Then look there...
Good luck |
