Default How do you guys keep your lights on!!??

I just burned another socket, the part that separates the terminals. This is the 3rd set of sockets I have had. First set was from Snyders and lasted the longest. Last two were Macs. How do I get good functioning lights while retaining all the stock stuff? 6v positive ground with a generator. I am really not having fun when I get stuck driving at night.

How do you use butt connectors? Did you do away with the original sockets?

Why is my headlight getting so hot as to melt the material that separates the connectors? I have only replaced my driver side once. Pass side melts the material or warps it to the point that it no longer works.

Its not that the bulb is hot enough to melt it. Its that the connection contact point is too small causing resistance and heat, Dielectric grease may help.

you could try leds they draw less.

passenger may be more of a problem because its farther down the line.

I am using all original componets,no problems with original setup in over 40 years, but used heavier gauge wire for the sockets inside the buckets ---changed to halogen bulbs 15 years ago-- ===I look in the junk boxes at flea markets for such things ---I havn't looked lately but none of the repros I ave seen were close to "original specifications"

How many candlepower are the bulbs you are using? 32-32? 32-50?

At 6 volts, you will be drawing a lot of amps with most of the headlight bulbs we use today (except LED). The slightest resistance (due to a poor connection, a bit of corrosion, etc.) will turn into a LOT of heat when you have a lot of amps going though there. And the heat usually results in a poorer connection, causing even more resistance and more heat being generated from the same amps.

As mentioned by another post, make sure you have the correct wire ends.
