What to take on a trip
Hi all,
I am starting to pack for our NCRG and am leaving on Fri. Besides the following what do people take 'just in case': -basic tools -extra water/gas/oil -spare elect. parts (pts./cond/coil/cut out) -duct tape/bailing wire -spare tube -meter I tried the search function but could not find what Iwas looking for. I know it is here somewhere though. Mike

How are you going to inflate that spare tube?

Re: What to take on a trip
I'm not saying I take all these things with me when I 'tour', however I do have a lot of these parts.
http://modela.webs.com/technical%20f...ouringPrep.htm If you tour with a club, others might have the stuff you don't. I remember being on a tour with my dad many years ago, and somebody lost a timing gear. No problem; several people pooled resources and had the car back on the road in a little over an hour. Another tour - replaced a water pump after it started pumping water out the compression nut. I've swapped distributors twice since I've owned my car. I've given away ignition switches and coils; light bulbs, wires, fuses, points. Small stuff is easy to pack. Good luck and have fun. |

Thanks everybody for the input. I have most of everything listed. I am so stoked to be going I probably won't sleep the night before!!! We are headed to beautiful Sonora in the foothills of the Sierras.

Re: What to take on a trip
a good set of jumper cables and a list of model a clubs near the towns you will go thru, they can be awful handy helping you get going again, and you will meet a bunch of great people

Re: What to take on a trip
There are several excellent articles and threads on this subject, including the “What to have onboard on a long tour” thread on this forum, some threads in the archives, Bent Wheel Willie’s “On-Board Model “A” Ford Tools, Parts and Supplies” from the Model “A” News (sorry, I don’t recall the issue) and “Bill Brigden’s “What Do I Take With Me On A Road Trip?” from March/April 2008 The Restorer, from which I have developed my own multi-page “Make sure to remember this…” checklist. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Re: What to take on a trip
Leave the gas at home. It's too dangerous to carry anywhere but the gas tank. There are plenty of stations on all roads

Re: What to take on a trip
Not sure why you would carry jumper cables, maybe they meant 'jumper wires' as they can come in very handy, as well as 1 or 2 vice grips, and JB weld or similar product.

Re: What to take on a trip
Carry spares for any non original parts you have on the car and know how to install them (no one else will know). There is a good chance someone will have spares for the original parts.

Re: What to take on a trip
Maybe covered in above artcles to reference; however, sometimes past experience shows that the obvious simple things are not packed: Tire tube patches, tire iron, crank/lug wrench, (check lug tightness often), paper towels, jack & jack handle, pair of work gloves, towel to place on fender so belt buckle doesn't scratch the paint, your favorite vendor's parts catalog, i.e, w/phone # to overnight emergency parts if needed, maybe remove rotor if car parked unattended day or night, any fuses?, Rain-x on windshield, No-Fog product on insides of windsheild & windows, keys for spare tire lock & trunk lock, flashlight, feeler gauge, maybe even a tow strap for the unimaginable -- wish best of luck for a safe enjoyable trip.

Re: What to take on a trip
1930ArtDeco,
You are only a tank of gas away, Oakland to Sonora, although it might be a good idea to top off if your guage shows 1/4 or less. You aren't going to have any problem but lots of fun with a dozen guys waiting to advise you on any worry you might have when you get there. What model and color Model A are you driving? Anything distinctive? I'll look you up and say Hi. I will probably be wearing an orange jacket or cap. Look out for Glenn in Camino too, an old friend of mine. Remember cell phone, credit card, AAA Premier (one 200 mile tow) in addition to the 100 regular tow. Richard Anaheim CA [email protected] |

Re: What to take on a trip
Hi Richard,
I am taking my 30 TS (avatar) and I will probably be wearing my Acorn A's jacket a lot. I am also working with the Fashion show this year. But I will be keeping an eye out for you. I am going up with one of my clubs so I have plenty of brain power on the trip with me. I started to compile all of the stuff last night and will grease things tonight or tomorrow. Thanks everybody for the info. I know there are post here someplace I just could not find them. Mike

Re: What to take on a trip
I always carry a spare distributor that has the points set at .020, and the timing set for my car. I run it on the car for a number of miles until I am satisfied that it is performing per Henry. I put it in a plastic bag and put it under the seat. As long as the large screw on the distributor cam is not disturbed the timing will remain intact. If there is a suspected electrical fault in the ignition the spare distributor can be dropped in without having to set the points or the timing.
I also carry a by-pass cable that screws into the base of the distributor and clips to the low side of the coil. This will by-pass the ignition key, associated wiring, and the pop-out cable. An important tool to have along is a trouble light. They are sold at any auto parts store from about $3 to $10. The trouble light works on either 6 or 12 volts, positive or negative ground. There are nine voltage points where you should find voltage. Place the probe on all nine points, If the voltage is there the trouble light lights. If the voltage is not at all the nine points it is an indication where the voltage loss is. I also carry a spare lower distributor shaft in case I have to install the spare distributor in someone elses car and I find the removed distributor has a single long shaft. If I have to install the distributor in someone elses car the timing has to be re-set. Tom Endy |
