Default Need freight suggestions

I'm in PA, and it seems all the good sheet metal is out west.
I have found a couple promising pieces, some coupe quarters in CA, a disassembled tudor body in Colorado.
In both cases, the sellers offered to strap everything to a pallet, but that's it. Neither has any experience with freight.
I've checked YRC and u-ship for quotes, but really don't know if that's the way to go. I know it's not going to be cheap.
If you've done this before, i'd be glad to hear what your experience was.

Exclamation Re: Need freight suggestions

I have used U-Ship twice (In Both Cases For Jeep Engines) and couldn’t be happier with the service I would definitely do again. Fastenal completely shut down their shipping for more than a year during covid and still haven’t started shipping nation wide (last I knew, nothing West of Mississippi River)

Thanks all.
Fastenal was what my motorcycle buddies always used, but i had heard that they changed their delivery zones. I may still try them.
First stop might be to check with Jim. Maybe he's looking for something to do...
I'm grateful for the uship review.

I have shipped many items using Greyhound. Packing is important, obviously, but I have had good luck with them. Maybe your items are too large to use them.

I have used Fastenal many times with no issues. Parts must be on a pallet.
The best part is that the buyer pays the freight when picked up...seller just drops the pallet off at the local Fastenal store; no pre-payment by the seller.
It has been a few years, so check in with your local store for current rules.

Arrow Need freight suggestions

Thank You to those who recommended me.

Unfortunately - the odds of me transporting
a vehicle along the same route that someone
needs parts hauled on and having available
space - are pretty slim.

As a result - I usually end up transporting
only parts that accompany a vehicle I am
transporting.

It seems that whenever I post availability
to transport - no one wants anything
hauled along the route I have available.

Right now I have an empty trailer on my
way to Phoenix, AZ from Albuquerque, NM
February 14th ….

I have to pick up a vehicle for the
Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in
Fairbanks, Alaska that was
purchased at Barrett Jackson and take
it up to the Seattle, Washington area.

I will be available for direct enclosed
vehicle transport from the Seattle area
around February 25th.

Something the size of an automobile or an automobile body is always a challenge to get it shipped. Less than a truck load shipping is the backbone of commerce. There is always a way to ship stuff LTL. It either needs to be palletized well or crated in a fashion to be fork lifted or pallet jacked. LTL shippers like to deliver to areas convenient to large trucks so folks that are in urban residential areas need to arrange a drop off at a facility that can accommodate that. I've had literally tons of stuff shipped and received over the years and the price will always depend on weight and size. Knowing a good freight broker can be an advantage.

I have my own trailer for the big stuff so I go get it on my own. I've also rented trucks and trailers to retrieve things but it's a little more expensive than using my own equipment. It's mostly about convenience on which way I go with that.

I recommend joining a local chapter of a model A club. This is the best way to find things available more locally. It can pay off in having association with like minded people in your immediate area. These folks don't always advertise what they may want to sell.

I'm with rotorwrench. If you have the time and equipment, or can rent them, doing it yourself may be the best option.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm going to check some different services, and will post what i find, in case anyone else runs into this.
As Jim pointed out, i'm trying to get something from a pretty remote location which gives me fewer options.

I bought a pair of 1937 running boards, without the rubber, from a guy in California. I checked with Jim since he was going to be within about 60 miles of my house on a cross-country trip and I also considered Greyhound and Fastenal. I ended up using UPS Ground and the parts arrived within 3-4 days, at my door. That is when I found out Fastenal doesn't ship coast to coast.

Check the size and weight of the quarter panels to determine whether this might be an option for you.

Hello Sir,

While I am not due to start my many west coast transports until late March/ early April, I routinely add a couple of parts along with a car transport. I do NOT have any problem veering off course to help another car guy (within reason). My number one concern is the customers car that I am transporting as MANY of them are well into the 6 figure range & the owners of these highly valued classics don't want to see a bunch of parts piled in a trailer like has been seen from others who don't have my reputation.

Here are a couple of gentlemen who are life long car guys & Quality, Honest Transporters as well These gentlemen are trusted 100% by me to do what they say & NOT do anything to besmirch my reputation by recommending them!

Dave Phelps (724) 815-6266

Jim Rhinehart (224)688-4352

Either of them can be trusted & may have something already on their schedule coming back from the west coast. They may be able to help. Tell them I sent you.

By the way...This is the MILDEST Winter I have ever seen in my 40 + years of transporting & I am almost sad I took a couple of months off the road (Dec & Jan)!!!

God Bless

Arrow Another Brutal Winter

I have been here on Fordbarn since
Ryan bought it from Miss Shelly.

Before Ryan bought Fordbarn - I ran
a box ad at the top of Fordbarn and
Chevy barn for years with Miss Shelly.

I started transporting in 2006 with
the creation of my website that
I personally wrote the code for.

I actually transport year round.

So - I don’t look out my front door
to comment on what the National
Weather Forecast actually is
when I schedule vehicle transport:

For Most Of The Nation This Has Been
And Continues To Be - A Brutal Winter

Today’s Forecast Calling For Record Snowfall

I plan my routes based on regional
weather forecasts - I don’t transport
vehicles along routes that are not
safe to drive.

I left Sunday from North Scottsdale, AZ
with this 1930 Chrysler Roadster that sold
at The Scottsdale Bonham Auction
on January 27th, 2023:

I check the weather along my route several
times daily from a variety of online weather
smart phone apps.

There was a high wind advisory for I-40 with
notice of wind gusts up to 70 mph on Tuesday.

So I got thru that portion of my trip before
the winds came thru - this morning I am in Visalia, CA:

I am helping a friend with some electrical work
at his home today before continuing north
along I-5 to the Seattle, WA area to drop off.

This museum transport marks at least 46 vehicles
safely delivered to at least 9 museums since 2006.
