Black Wheels

Alright guys, let me know what you think. After one of my previous post I am planning to paint my wheels black. Attached is a picture of my car with photoshopped wheels. I think powder coated black wheels are in my future. It will take some getting used to after years of my vermillion wheels.

Black is the only way to go for your year of car. Any other color for a 28/29 vehicle and poor old Henry would turn in his grave.

Black wheels look great IMO, but I'd paint them and leave the powder coating for the patio furnature.

JMO, but the black is classy and seems proper in time. Colored wheels look like one is trying to make it something it isn't............a hoyty toyty car.

I think you should paint the wheels the color YOU REALLY WANT TO PAINT THEM Be original! I think Henry Ford might have said, "I have provided you with a very good dependable basic car, now go acessorize or customize it to your liking, don't be a conformist!"
Let's not be so tough on the hot rodders. Chief, (my dad) said hot rodding and racing of Model A's was a trend even when the cars were quite new down in the "back woods" of south eastern Oklahoma.

With the black wheels I see the car as a whole. With colored wheels of white walls I see the wheels first then the car. I like black on black and you did ask how we felt about it.

Black is back!! One word of caution. If you do alot of driving, the kind that gets you caught in rain, etc many miles from the garage, NOTHING looks worse that dirty, muddy, black wheels. Just my observation.

MikeV has it right. With black wheels you see the car first and the whole car is the feature. If the wheel were painted the wheels would be the feature - backwards to me. I love the black look. Part JMHO and part color psychology.

Color on the wheels looks nice on the '30-'31 upscale models, like Vickys and Deluxe Phaetons, but I really like the black on the early iron. I did high gloss powder coat on mine and they look great.

Jamie,I went through the same thing several years ago.My 30 tudor had french gray wheels and whitewall tires,changed them to black wheels and blackwall tires.Took some time to get used to but I really like the simplistic look.By the way the pic of your tudor is my screen-saver.I really like the look.

I think my black powder coated wheels look great and the powder coating makes them much more chip resistant.

Using black certainly is the way I would go. If I may make a suggestion; pinstriping the car "as original" will make the finishing touch. I believe the pinstripe should be French Gray. Gar Williams

When I read a statement like paint 'em (the wheels) and leave the powdercoating to patio furnature, --again, ...I can't help but chuckle. Chances are that if I or many others here were to spray coat wheels with a paint, it would likely be PPG's Concept paint. Basically this urethane paint when catalyzed with a chemical to cure the paint would be a thin layer of plastic paint possibly with a primer (i.e. Epoxy) underneath. If I were to powdercoat those same wheels, I typically use a very finely milled polyester powder that when heated to cure it, it becomes a plastic paint. Therefore, there really is no difference except the powder paint process is a little more enviro friendly because the lack of airborne solvents and its effects on the person applying it.

Now another misconception with powdercoating is the quality of the materials used. Let me put it this way, if I were looking for a quality paint job that will last a long time (good shell for chip resistance, good UV holdout, pigment purity, etc.) I would use a good quality paint such as PPG's Concept, DuPonts Chroma series, etc. What I would not do is go down to Tractor Supply and buy a gallon of their signature-series Implement Black paint for use when I wanted the characteristics of lasting a long time. Now surely you know there is a huge price difference between the $49 and the $280 dollar paint, and the same applies between the quality of powder paints out there. Common sense should prevail that we cannot paint a wheel for $25 each if we are going to use the $280 a gallon paint! That same mindset applies to shops that offer bargain pricing on powder painting wheels. You get what you pay for and if the bargain pricing is a value to you, then that is OK but please don't complain about flow-out and durability of powdercoating.
