non release pressure plate 1930 coupe
I have been slowly getting this car drivable sense last July. The motor has been starting and running ok. I have driven it only a few miles. Under ten anyway,
So the other day on a test run I noticed the clutch dragging. No sweat, I crawled down there and adjusted the rod and gave it the start the car and put it in gear test and it was fine. Slipped into gear fine. How ever, I didn't drive the car tell today. Drove through town and hit a couple of lights and stops. Used the peddle as needed but noticed the release was getting closer to the floor again. By time I got home there was no clutch release at all. I removed the floor and the throw out inspection plate and found. The fingers on the pressure plate are remaining "in" after I release the throw-out bearing. The pressure plate still has the clutch disc in-gauged. Very strange. I would think the disc would be free and I could go into gear at any time. the disc won't in-gauge. Any thoughts? Thanks for any input. |

Yes .The fingers are remaining in. The rest if the parts are doing their part.
When I adjusted the linkage I think I went most of the way on the rod. Thanks Flamingo. |

See if the bearing will turn. If it is locked it may have heated the fingers till they bent. I have had this happen before.

If the pressure plate fingers are staying pressed forward, then the lining must be torn up and doubled up under the pressure plate. I can't think of anything else to keep the fingers from coming back.

Is it possible the fingers can be pressed in so far they will over-center? Causing the pressure plate to do this? |

Better pull the trans & replace the PP & disc.Use the modern disc that uses the center torsion springs & wafer springs between the discs. They engage much smoother than the old style solid center disc.I toss the old style discs even if they look good. The fingers should not go over center if pushed in to far.

By looking in the inspection cover hole, can you see any chunks of lining material showing, or doubled up? Bill W.

Thanks Fellows for your thoughts and advice.
I can't see any chunks or is anything bouncing around in the bell area. I am resigning myself to the fact I will be removing the trans and replacing the out of whack parts soon. When and if I find anything out of the ordinary I will try to submit a report. |
