best 6 volt pump
I have a carter 6 volt pump for start up on my 55 6 volt 272 engine..Works fine for start up but not enough gas getting through when cruising at 40 or 50 mphand i have to switch the electrci on every little bit...So if the electris stops i am in trouble..Is there a better flow through pump out there..

Re: best 6 volt pump
Airtex. I still have the mechanical pump, so it pushes the gas through it. I use the Airtex to fill the carb, if the car has been sitting for a long period. If I get vapor lock while driving, I simply turn on the pump and the issue is resolved immediately.

Re: best 6 volt pump
Here is the best way around it (IMO) if determined to keep a mechanical pump. Put the electric (and filter) on a by-pass circuit. It can then be used either as a primer or supply pump (or rely on the mechanical pump if electric pump fails) -
A mechanical pump has difficulty drawing through an electric pre-pump filter (10 micron). EDIT - CORRECTION! - The above photo is not 100% accurate as to placement of filter. See post #10 below ...

In the ILL I showed, the fuel filter is in the wrong location.

Re: best 6 volt pump
wouldn't a check valve in the bypass line help keep fuel pressure to the carb?
seems like with the electric pump running fuel pressure could be directed back towards the tank or back to the inlet side of the electric pump. |

With the install fashion shown the pump can be used either as a primer or full time. - http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/...fuel-pump.html

Re: best 6 volt pump
Let me try to hopefully make this a little more clear as the photo I posted is incorrect as to the filter position. I found the photo of a correct install but it will not upload here for whatever reason.
The fuel filter is necessary for the electric pump only. It (10 MICRONS) keeps the pump from being jammed in case there may be a JAPANESE MIDGET SUBMARINE in the fuel tank. A mechanical pump is not designed to pull through a filter. It may cause vapor lock or fuel blend separation. The fuel filter is placed after the mechanical pump (100 MICRONS) or the filter(s) is in the pump fuel bowl). So on the by-pass circuit, you want only the one way flow valve. The electric pump circuit needs the filter before the pump. The fuel pressure should be gravity fed to the electric pump as they were not designed to draw, only pressurize. Ethanol laced gasoline de-solves any varnish/filth in the fuel system. It is also very hard on cellulose fuel filters. They will breakup after a while and foul the carburetor/injectors. Also a good idea to add a drain-cock to the bottom of the fuel tank if it is taken out for cleaning/repair. Fuel blend separation is real, especially with vented fuel tanks. ... uh ... - OFFICIAL KULTULZ EDIT - The 100 MICRON filter goes before the electric pump and the 10 MICRON (FI)_or 40 MICRON (CARB) goes before the INJ or CARB.
