Default What Bolt goes Where. Adventures of a first time builder.

I made the mistake of not noting a single bolt or bracket I stripped of this 1937 ford pickup frame. I’ve built Harley Davidsons my whole life and there, as well as military manuals, show every part, every bolt and their sizes in an exploded view. Ford, not so much. If there is a helpful manual covering the chases parts of a 37 could you please let me know. Maybe a web page for dummies?
Thanks

This is your best bet right here. Plenty of good folks willing to help. I'm real familiar with 35-36 pickups, but 37s are a whole different ball of wax.

Another perhaps useful idea... go to ThirdGen Automotive's site and get a copy of the late Roy Nacewicz' fastener catalog. It has some general descriptions of fasteners (e.g., fake example "Pedal Assy to frame kit-three 3/8"-24 hex bolts, nuts, lock washers, S-2 finish") and where they go, along with a few photos that might help somewhat. Not sure about '37 truck stuff though.

You may find it easier to just buy some of those kits and you'll also be assured that it's the right stuff.

Good luck

Suggest the Early Ford V-8 Club's 1937 Ford Book. The book is basically for passenger vehicles, but under the body and in the engine compartment it is all the same and the information would be helpful.

Hey paetsgone, I am in the same boat..! I inherited a dissembled 34 pickup and a bunch of parts that I got to figure out what goes where and how..LOL. I did however bag and tag what I did take apart so far as well as lots of pictures for reference later.

I use the reprint of the Ford "Chassis Parts List" from 1928-1937 book V-34 along with the other sources already mentioned. Sometimes the attaching hardware is listed for a component and there is a listing of standard parts in the back with basic dimensions such as thread size.

thanks to everyone. When i starting many years ago i kept everything in bags. Brought a knucklehead engine to my engine builder one time and he yelled at me for putting all the stuff in all these different bags. I know where it all goes, he said. I told him i didn't. I make do with the sources you mentioned thanks again

Why not just lay everything out and many will be obvious.
Sometimes we just need to work things out for ourselves and not expect the answers laid on a plate for us.
That said, anything you are unsure about just ask.
Mart.

Some of this depends on whether your truck will be judged or just used because you want to ride around in an old truck. I like Marts idea. Once you start putting things back together it will all make sense and come back to you. I have a ‘37 pickup in a lot of pieces, that’s the way I got it. Can’t wait to start putting the puzzle back together.........Mark

I use the green book frequently. It gives the nomenchature for all bolts and many schematics of their location. I see the book frequently on fordbarn for about $20. I hear it is available online.

Just two more cents:
Having all the nuts and bolts mixed is going to be a challenge. One thing might be to just sort them all by size shape and thread, and any other unique features.
You may find that you have just the right count and size to fit in certain places.
The bolts probably won't care unless they need to be a certain grade for certain places. Features on the heads might give clues.

Bag and tag them after sorting, and it will probably start to make sense. Like sorting out the edge piece for a puzzle, You know they only go one place.

Good luck we need some pictures! Even if they are of rows of old bolts!
Might be fun to see if the folks on here can pick out a bolt that goes somewhere on your vehicle!
Regards,
Chris

Post a picture or at least a description of the bolt. No doubt someone can help you. Part number and torque. Best of luck

Being we live in a digital age, take a sh!t load of pictures when doing dissemble. Saved me a few times.

A bit back a new family member through marriage came up to move bear bait barrels with his kid. They struggled moving them. I pushed a dolly to the kid and he refused to use it because his dad didn't. All I said to him was work smart, not hard. I don't think it penetrated the kids cranium as he struggled with the barrel.

Get your family involved. Make it fun studying the parts. As said, look and the bolt heads. If the car had been repainted, some bolts may have retained that color. Henty tried to install bolts with the threads down, so if the nut went away, the bolt would still be there. clean bolt head might indicate the heads were inside the car. Can I say that all model A and eV-8's bolts have no strength numbers on their heads? Can I say that carriage bolts had limited use?

I have what I think is a 1937 truck. I got if off a ranch almost 50 years ago. The running gear is there including the transmission. If I get off my duff this spring, I plan on offering up parts off the truck for sale. If there is any picture that I can take to help you figure out what you need to do, please let me know.
