Default KwikWay Valve Seat Cutter - 1.72" Intake Valves in 59L Block

There are various tools used to cut out the hard seats and install new ones. It is important that you have Flathead Ford specific mandrels that pick up the lifter and guide bores to drive the cutters on. The more rigid the mandrel, the better.

One should not attempt to use a valve guide and an OHV pilot to do any of the seat work. The stock guides are too loose in the guide bores! I'm fortunate to have located both Sioux and KwikWay double-mandrels - for both my valve seat tooling setups.

There are carbide cutters that can be used to cut seat angles, thought they are surely not more accurate than using correct stone procedures. Also, some seat cutters will cut multiple angles in one pass --- like 30, 45 and 60.

There are also cutters designed to cut out the original hard seats, bore the pockets oversize and then one can install new/larger seats. On 100% race blocks, one could remove the hard seats completely and put large 1.75" valve seats directly into the cast iron of the block.

Here are a couple video links that I made at the end of last year that show an ancient KwikWay seat cutting tool (glad I found one!), the resulting new/wider seat pockets (for 1.72" valves) and then my friend Jeff Fowler driving in a new seat.
