Default 40 Ford oil leak

I've had my 40 Ford for about about 5 months and decided it was time to change the oil and give the under carriage a good look. I was under the car once before but I hadn't changed the oil. Theres an oil leak around the transmission shift leavers. I bought new seals but I can't see how the arms come off to replace them. Also, when I removed the oil plug, there was no gasket or O ring. I can't imagine this is right. Looks like I'm leaking oil under the plug when the car is parked. I could use some advice.
Thanks
John

There should be a gasket under the oil plug. To replace the seals in the shift cover you will need to remove the cover for this. The cover can be removed without removing the transmission. The arms are held in place via a pin thats peened in place , a roll pin works as a good replacement. Just done mine a month ago.

Gasket under the oil plug? Don't think so, it's a taper pipe plug. If it leaks, use Teflon tape on it.

The shift levers are pinned to the shift fork shafts. After you get them off, pry out the seals & carefully install the new ones with the lip facing the trans. The filler & drain plugs have a pipe thread,so no seals required.Clean the threads off well & apply a bit of Permatex or pipe dope on the male threads & that should seal it.It may be leaking from the shaft ends at the back of the case or from the ends of the pin that retains the shafts.Use some brake cleaner or laquer thinner to clean rear & bottom of trans to see where oil is coming from.Sometimes trans have been apart so many times that the bores in the case are worn oversize.

Never seen a tapered plug on any of my 40 oil pans, they all have a gasket under them. We are talking about the oil pan aren't we?

I think there confused on what oil plug you talking about. The plug on engine oil pan should have a gasket. the plug on the trans is a pipe thread and don't have a gasket. Walt

When replacing the gasket, are you talking about a paper or copper gasket or an O ring? There's a groove in the plug that looks like it will accept an O ring. Thank for all the help, I'm learning.

I would use a Copper gasket if you have one.

I also think a copper gasket would be the best, but were do I find one, or should I just try and make one?

He's talking about the trans, not the pan.

Ain't this fun. I wish he would say if it's the engine oil pan drain plug or the trans drain plug. The origional 40 oil pan has a big drain plug about 2in. in dia. This ought to make this thread drag out awhiloe longer. Walt

Hey JBC, Clarify for us if your talking about the engine oil pan plug or the transmission drain plug. I assumed you were talking about the engine oil pan since you said in your first post that you wanted to change the oil.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm talking about the oil pan plug. My plug had no gasket when I removed it. I checked with NAPA and they couldn't help. But I was able to find an O ring. John

I've checked with a number of part houses and no one has a gasket for the 40 ford oil pan plug. With all the flat heads out there, I would think I could find one. I'm not sure whether it's a copper or paper gasket. Has anyone used an O ring?

Dennis Carpenter, Mac's, Bob Drake, and any other good V8 supplier has the oil pan bolt gasket.

Ken, You are correct... a gasket always. Originally it was a wire impregnated asbestos gasket
