Default Two tooth worm installation

How hard is it to replace the two tooth worm gear on to the steering shaft at home. I do not have a press. I'd like some advise before I remove the steering column. I need to rebuild / repair mine. the box has a lot of play and the car wonders a lot. The steering box is all original. Thanks in advance

It may be possible to replace the worm without a press, but it will be extremely difficult. You are going to be much better off either buying a new steering shaft with a worm already installed, or taking it to a machine shop to have it pressed on and off. Sometimes the aggravation isn't worth the money saved.

This link shows how to do it without a press.
The link didn't work, looks like this site blocked it.

It seems the older I get the more true this is...

We had a seminar a while back and I asked the question about putting the new worm on the shaft and was told to tap the shaft and use a bolt to pull it on. Works like a dream and doesn't hurt anything

Buy a new shaft with worm installed. I think MACs is the only manufacturer but you can buy one through other suppliers. Don't forget a new sector and bushings

At least some of the vendors now sell the shaft and worm separately after complaints from people like us. Until they went back to doing this, we had to buy a shaft with LHD worm fitted and a RHD worm, remove the wrong one and fit the correct one. I'm still amazed that they decided it was a good idea to only sell LHD worm already fitted to a shaft and no shafts alone.
